Patriots and Rams Deliver a Super Bowl Deserving of its Halftime Show
DB Daily Update ^ | David Blackmon

Today’s Campaign Update (Because The Campaign Never Ends)

Can somebody tell me why I still watch these things? – The NFL almost pulled off what I had always assumed was the utterly impossible last night, staging a Super Bowl game that was very nearly as boring and tedious as a damn soccer match. Yes, yes, yes, I know – it was a “great defensive battle,” right? Spare me, please.

It was a game in which LA Rams quarterback Jared Goff played worse than any Super Bowl QB since at least Billy Kilmer and really since Joe Kapp in Super Bowl IV. The vaunted Rams offense punted on its first 8 possessions, racking up a princely 3 first downs in the process, before finally breaking through with an actual drive that resulted in an actual score – a field goal – with a few minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.

You read that right: Rams fans (I’m not one) had already had to sit through that atrocity of a halftime show before their team even scratched the scoreboard. At least Patriots fans (I’m not one of those, either) got to see their guy kick a field goal before the NFL rolled Adam Levine, Maroon 5 and a bunch of hip-hop artists who CBS had to keep bleeping out onto the field to deliver what has to have been the most dreadful halftime show since Up With People performed back in the mid-70s.

Somewhere, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam is no doubt preparing to have a press conference in which he says something like, “look, I have worn full-length mink coats and heavy chain jewelry while in black face many times in my life, but I swear I was not that fat rapper who performed with Maroon 5 last night, and I want to use facial recognition software to prove it.”

The show’s sole redeeming value was that the media-hyped promise that Levine would give some sort of tribute to all the wealthy NFL slobs who kneel during the national anthem failed to materialize. Guess either the NFL or CBS warned him off.

For their own part, Tom Brady and the Patriots offense played possum through the first 53 minutes of the contest before Brady finally started targeting all-time great tight end Rob Gronkowski on a fantastic drive that ended in a TD run by RB Sony Michel. The Rams got the ball back and, with the Patriots in a soft “prevent” defense, promptly moved the ball to the New England 27 yard line before Goff very predictably threw an interception that effectively ended the contest. That INT occurred with 2:43 remaining on the game clock, ending the lone 4-minute and 17-second flurry of actual action in this three-hour long contest.

When you think about it, that’s actually not as tedious and boring as the average soccer match, which will have about 45 seconds of actual action spread over about two and a half hours.

So, at the end of the night, in spite of everything – including Adam Levine taking his shirt off, I guess in a tribute to Janet Jackson – American football is still better than soccer. Faint praise, but it’s all I got.

But it actually WAS a great defensive battle.

I didn’t watch the game, but I love good defensive football. In fact, it’s part of the reason I don’t watch football as much anymore.

The problem is that every time there’s a low-scoring game, people whine and the league feels even more pressure to skew the rules in favor of the offense.

Gladys Knight was a highlight of the evening. She certainly did a classy rendition of the Anthem, and didn't drag it out like some of the wanna-be divas who've performed in the past.

She was under a little pressure:

Lt. Col. Eric Gorney told “CBS This Morning” he’d be in the control room Sunday with a spreadsheet, “hacking the clock at the end of each line of the national anthem to make sure we're on time.”

“I'm reliant on Gladys Knight to execute on script on time,” Gorney said. “The first thing to remember is we're going 400 mph. So we can't just stop and hover. ... We have started flying in about a minute prior to the national anthem even starting.”

The soul singer, who also chatted with “CBS This Morning,” said she will get the timing down. “I say I'm gonna do it, and you guys will know exactly when I'm gonna do this line right here,” Knight laughed. https://www.ajc.com/news/world/super-bowl-air-force-thunderbirds-reliant-gladys-knight-for-game-day-flyover/JdqcLzrVw4g5vRpbU1NOCJ/

But these weren't considered to be great defensive teams going in.

Only two of the rams even put their hands over their hearts for the anthem.

The rest couldn’t be bothered... so not impressed... and the news story next week will be which football players don’t want to go to the whitehouse because racism... so predictable. I am over it.

Never watching again. It was a snooze fest.

“Are we going to boycott the leftist-loving NFL or aren’t we?”

Some will, some won’t——we are not sheep.

Budweiser now pays for WIND POWER to brew their beer now, isn’t that good with chips and salsa? “””

Windmills are SHUT DOWN when it is really cold. I don’t know the exact temperature number, but they DO NOT work in extreme cold. What was Budweiser using in the past 2 weeks for power with those harsh temps???

Budweiser has at least a dozen breweries, from New Jersey to Texas to California. They’re lying if the claim all their electricity comes from wind.

I was at a party during the Super Bowl. After the WashPo commercial one of my more moderate friends sneered and said they wasted $4.5 million and didn’t change one mind.

Stopped watching both “news” and “sports” years ago.
And you’re correct. My life is more fulfilled now than it was when I wasted my time watching the fake news and fake sports.

Some of my old buddies from school have asked me what in the world I do with all of my time now that I don’t spends hours and hours watching news and sports.

I just look at them and shake my head. If they don’t understand, then I can’t explain it to them.

Life is not listening to some news anchor or taking head every night of the week. Or watching some game or listening to some sports commentator all weekend.

Life is everything outside of those contrived pursuits.

Yesterday was my birthday. I spent it playing with my 21 month old granddaughter and visiting with my daughter. Eating a favorite meal with the family. Not one TV was on the whole day and no one complained.

Life is good when you live it, instead of wasting it on trivial activities..

Such a perfect post!

Thank you for such wise words... Glad you had fun playing with you granddaughter. I am still waiting for my first grandchild. I am ready, but I think my young adult children are not...

Remember Shawshank Redemption?

Get busy living or get busy dying.

Peace and happiness to you and your wonderful family. :)

It was a close game and a defensive struggle. I liked the game. Way better than a blow out. Blow outs are really boring.

Thank you.

With age, hopefully comes some wisdom and clarity.

I turned 71 yesterday, so I've got the age part down.

The wisdom? The jury is still out on that. :-)

For everyone bashing Maroon 5 and Adam Levine..a few points I’d like to make. Yes, it was a mediocre show. Yes, he was shirtless by the end of the set. And yes, he’s a leftie. However, I think credit needs to be given to Levine. For months now, he’s been hen-pecked by the left for doing the show to begin with. He was to have stood in solidarity with all the other leftists who boycotted and wouldn’t perform. As I watched the show, I was waiting for Maroon 5 to go political. And they didn’t. Not once. Levine fought the backlash for doing the show, and today he’s taking backlash from the left for not using it to push their political agenda. So yes..I will give credit where credit it due.
