Project Wing returning to Virginia to test appetite for real world drone delivery service

Backyards around Virginia — possibly in Wise, Loudoun, Montgomery and Roanoke counties — are poised to serve as the next proving grounds for drone delivery technology, as Google’s sister company prepares to return stateside after nearly a year of testing in Australia.

But this time Project Wing says the experiments are less about whether or not it has the ability to airdrop deliveries onto your lawn in a matter of minutes — it already knows it can do that.

The question now: Do people want it?

“The reality is the technology has come a long way. We’ve done extensive testing, getting safety data and reliability data and making sure our system is ready for the real world,” Project Wing co-lead James Ryan Burgess said. “So it’s less about the technology and more about how applicable the technology is into people’s lives.”

Package delivery is just one of several commercial drone applications that will be tested under the White House-initiated UAS Integration Pilot Program....

The question now: Do people want it?

The question no one has answered yet, do people's neighbors want thousands of drones buzzing above a city? I have no idea why companies are focusing on flying vehicles rather than self driving delivery robots on the streets.

I’ve heard there are privacy concerns, such as drones flying above your house, seeing your backyard, and even peeking in your windows.

As with any new technology, there are issues and standards and probably new laws coming, to deal with concerns

Delivery drones? I keep calling them “flying pinatas”. Shoot em down and see what prize you get. LOL.

How long before some crazy puts a cherry bomb with
a cigarette on the fuse for the return flight??

How many of these drones are going to be captured
and reprogrammed?

I can see them flying back to headquarters with
streamers attached that read, Eat at Bubba’s.
