Vacationing this coming week in Tennessee and have never been there. Looking for some ideas from fellow Freeper travelers, including insights, new places, off the beaten path places, places locals go to and places to avoid. (see below)
Nashville is a fun town. You need more than one night. The Hermitage (Andrew Jacksons plantation) was neat. Take a tour of the Jack Daniels distillery if you can get down to Lynchburg.
Appalachian Mountains in Tenn are spectacular ... go in the Autumn
Lynchburg, Tenn if you like whiskey ...
tour all the TVA dams on the Tenn river in Tenn ...
Tennessee is such a long state and we are already stretching the limits. Mrs. Michael.sf made Graceland a must stop, which pretty much designated the distance we would be traveling.
With four days in G'berg though a trip to Bristol may well be possible!
Lynchburg is not too far out of the way from Nashville. That sounds like a good side trip. Thanks!

Nashville is a great place to visit, we barely scratched the surface during our four days there. It was a special trip for me, my first road trip with my 3 boys (two sons and 7 YO grandson), an all guy trip.
We went primarily for the Gonzaga-Tennessee basketball game, but enjoyed the sights and sounds, such as the Country Music HOF. I really enjoyed the section on early rock and roll.
We have that scheduled for the day we're @ Linville. Discovered on AllTrails a trail that goes down to the foot of Linville falls, which we'll also do.
Linville Gorge is a true wilderness, make sure you remain on marked trails. People do get lost for days in there. Careful anywhere near the falls also, the moss and lichen are very slippery.
This might prove to be a marvelous experience.

We’ve been to Linville a couple of times. Of all the falls in the Blue Ridge that we’ve been to, it’s the most spectacular. Last year, we went up to Alum Cave Bluff in the park, and this year, we’re going to the Chimney Tops.
I was telling Mrs. abb the other day that it’s kinda odd that we’ve gotten on this hiking kick at our advanced ages (62, 68). However, it helps keep us active and we get to see stuff we would never have otherwise.

Sounds like you have Memphis down....be careful it’s got Johannesburg features
Gatlinburg was damaged by the fire
With four days you can day trip the whole smokies and up to Asheville NC and even raft the oocoee or nantahala rivers.....or go to Cumberland Gap
Be careful hiking ....for some reason black bear attacks have risen past five years
And so forth
Nashville.....you have to do lower Broadway clubs at night...

Urban Grub in 12 south is good too and I know the bartender....I also know the owner of pancake pantry....he used to run Red Pony in franklin...good young man...bought it two years ago
Lovelace cafe out Hwy 100 past Belle Meade good breakfast too
Sperrys in Belle Meade is clubby and rich but great food
Nashville has been overrun with gentrification and hipsters
Think an eastern Austin maybe 98% as liberal
Shame only one day in Nashville....
If it’s the same river I went on, I’d recommend against it. The river was shallow that day anyway; there were a lot of rocks in the river to get scratched on and just generally slow you down.
If you love waterfalls, plan a trip to the southern end of the NC mountains, just above South Carolina and Georgia. Top of the list would be Gorges State Park in Sapphire, NC. Whitewater Falls, both upper and lower combined are over 800 feet high. Rainbow Falls, hike to the bottom on a warm sunny day, stand in the copious mist and you’ll see why it’s called that. It also happens with a full moon but not actually permitted to do that and not advisable for people unfamiliar with the trails. There are three gorgeous towns nearby, Cashiers, Highlands and Glenville. Glenville is centered upon a fairly large lake, highest east of the Mississippi, the whole area is on a plateau about 3,600 ft with granite domes and other mountains rising another 2-3,000 ft surrounding you on the plateau. Love it there, really more than the Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk and Linville area although there’s nothing at all wrong with those places, quite beautiful too but in a different way. If you’re really into hiking, the old Cherokee village of Panthertown no longer exists but Panthertown Valley is a park with marked trails now.
Doing a Gatlinburg (Smoky Mountains) vacation ourselves soon - Holiday Inn Express deal - expect to take some nice walks/hikes and just enjoy the scenery.
Kenny Rogers is performing at Harrah’s Cherokee on Saturday the 26th, but you’re starting west and coming east sounds like.

It’s not a large town, but it’s a musical town!!.....Lots of music history....and the decor of the town reflect it.
There’s a very nice restaurant downtown and upstairs in a smallish room of the restaurant we heard an awesome musical montage from students of Appalachian College, Music Dept......I believe they do this monthly and it was free.....just spectacular
Of course, the Bristol Speedway is right outside of town too!
If you had a globe and could cut TN along its state border with an X-Acto knife and stick in a push-pin at Mountain City (NE) and rotate the whole state clockwise, Memphis would hit Ontario.
Driving distance Mtn City -->Memphis: 544 miles.
