A Russian Su-27 fighter jet performed an "unprofessional" intercept of a U.S. Navy P-8 surveillance plane while it was flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea Tuesday, two defense officials told CNN.

The Russian jet came within about 20 feet of the U.S. aircraft, one official said, adding that the encounter lasted about nine minutes.

The intercept was described by officials as safe but unprofessional, though a U.S. Navy official told CNN that the Navy does not officially classify aerial encounters that way. The Navy classifies aviation intercepts simply as either safe or unsafe.....

We’re monitoring Syria, they are monitoring us.

Cold war yawn. As we all here know this is nothing that did not happen all the time during the cold war. It was just not news worthy then.

I actually think our guys and their guys like this stuff. It breaks the monotony. We used to think is was cool watching the Soviet trawlers and planes as they watched us.

Great point and honestly I feel and think (without any known past experience in this arena) that it's true. I've been lately studying extensively Russian history from pretty much the beginning to the present. There's an odd camaraderie that underlies our military relationship. Maybe it's the independence and tendency to isolate ourselves from all those joiners called Europeans. lol. We're both very proud countries. And I believe we recognize and admire this in one another.

There used to be...not sure it exists anymore on the Western side.

This whining to the press about a Russian intercept is a good example, I thought only the British did that.

I remember hearing stories about our troops and Soviet troops trading with each other during the cold war. Mostly involving Alaska. The Soviets lacked a lot but they had vodka.

I have a friend who spent years as part of a P3 crew and he laughs his butt off at these reports. According to him, unless they were lit up by the targeting radar on the Soviet aircraft from 500 yards or less astern of them it wasn't even anything noteworthy.

IMHo, it's all hype for the propaganda mill to try and keep the grazing herd of people in flyover country focused on something other than them doing every underhanded thing they can to try to get rid of Trump.

That sounds so gay. Whining about the fighter plane that intercepts you as you cruise 12 miles off their coast. Our officers think everyone went to the Georgetown school of foreign service before a few joint commands and a finishing school.

Unlike that P-3 (ok, techincally an EP-3), a P-8 is highly unlikely to survive contact with another plane.

The NAF would post photos of the best snapshot of Ivan each week.

Most of the pictures I saw were pictures taken by Marines on sea duty. I really did not see that many myself. One of the best one I saw was when we were doing exercises off Southern California. There was a trawler
shadowing us so close he may as well been part of the formation. He suddenly accelerated and cut right through the formation. The sailors were going ape shit. After he did that he did a 180 and cut right back through and headed for the aft of the formation. The most excitement we had on that ship. Bells whistles horns going off....

The Russians used to bring a helicopter over our site and lower a rope. We’d tie a gallon of ice cream and a case of Coke on. What did we get? A possible lenient treatment when they crossed the Fulda Gap as we had no weapons other that the gate guard’s side arm. We even called them up on one of their secure channels and wished them Merry Christmas in Russian. In case they stopped by, we had the ultra top secret code word of the period stamped on the back of the gate guard’s helmet.

Most of the time we just had any given 15 seconds to live ...
