Which brings up an interesting point: with such a short half life such weapons cannot be stored. The program to enrich the salting agent to a useful point has to be active not long before the weapons are used.

Your numbers are wrong I think.
Thallium 181 has a 1/2 life of only 3 seconds.
I think you mean Thallium 208 which is a daughter decay product of U233 production.
It would probably kill anyone loading the weapon unless heavily shielded.
The research being reported on, involves particle beams of tantalum. What if the objective involves more of an orbital beam weapon?
What effect would a beam of tantalum atoms, moving at a good percentage of the speed of light, have on satellites? Or ICBM warheads or electronics?

I agree with you. I’m interested in this idea — from Carthage forward. I’ve never seen any documentation of it actually being done except symbolically. You’re right that you would need vast quantities and I’d imagine it would be leached out of the soil by rainfall in a relatively short period of time. Look at Carthage: After the Romans conquered it, it became a major grain growing center. It takes a lot to keep the corn dole going, you know!

The tantalum is probably not made radioactive until the bomb explodes.
