Today’s Campaign Update (Because The Campaign Never Ends) If the NFL were any more self-destructive we’d have to call it the DNC – the grand poobahs who run the NFL rejected an ad proposed for its Super Bowl game program by the military veterans group AMVETS because it was “too political.” The ad simply urged fans to stand for the national anthem at the game, using the phrase #PleaseStand, which the NFL judged to be unacceptable. I swear I don’t make this stuff up.
Here’s some advice for you when reading the news in the coming weeks and months: Don’t jump to any conclusions about the motivations of the various actors in the major Obama-era spying scandal and other stories we are seeing unfolding in Washington D.C. It is getting easier over time to separate the good guys from the bad guys, but there are so many false reports out there and the steps that are being taken by the good guys are often so subtle that first impressions can be wrong. So, best advice is to give yourselves a good 36-48 hours before drawing any conclusions, because these stories have a way of working themselves out to unexpected conclusions.
One good example of what I’m talking about: For some reason, I follow @TheHill on Twitter. The Hill used to be a respectable newspaper distributed mainly on Capitol Hill, but is now just another fake news outlet. I follow the rag’s Twitter feed mainly for the comic effect.
Anyway, Friday evening, @TheHill tweeted a story alleging, based anonymous sources of course, that DeutscheBank was accusing Jared Kushner of money laundering, and Robert Mueller was investigating. This was obviously a false story planted late on a Friday in the hopes it would linger all weekend and cause Kushner, and thus President Trump, reputational harm. When I saw the tweet from @TheHill, I responded saying exactly that, and that the clowns that run that Twitter feed are a disgrace to their profession. But they get that all the time, so…
Lo and behold, on Monday, DeutscheBank did indeed deny the story outright, and @TheHill meekly tweeted out the retraction. This is just an example of the kind of fake stories that are ubiquitous in our fake news media today. Some are planted by the DOJ/FBI cabal, some are planted by Mueller and his crew, some are planted by congressional Democrats like Adam Schiff, and some are even planted by the good guys.
Here’s an example of the latter: On Sunday evening, a fake story circulated alleging that FBI Director Christopher Wray had threatened to resign when Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered him to fire his corrupt and compromised Deputy Director, Andrew McCabe. This story immediately did not pass the smell test, given that it was yet again based only on anonymous sources, which is why I haven’t mentioned it in the last two Campaign Updates. I figured I’d give it a good 48 hours to work itself out. Guess what happened?
At mid-day on Tuesday, President Trump outright denied the fake story, and barely an hour later, the FBI announced that Chief of Staff James Rybicki was “resigning” to “seek other opportunities,” which is corporate speak for he’d been summarily fired. What do you reckon happened there? Here’s what seems likely: Rybicki was the “anonymous source,” having been fed that story by one of the good guys within the FBI, maybe by Director Wray himself.
This same process has been used by the President and AG Sessions to identify a number of leakers and get rid of them over the last 6-8 months, and will be used many times more. So be patient and don’t jump to conclusions – draining this swamp is going to take a long time.
Then there’s the story in Vanity Fair that claims the President and Chief of Staff John Kelly hate each other and President Trump has Ivanka Trump actively scouting for a replacement. Yeah, don’t believe that one either until you see it happen. Remember that everyone in the fake news media was claiming that Kelly was about to resign way back in September, after he’d been on the job for barely a month.
Every day is filled with stories in the fake news media that have literally zero basis in fact. There are so many of them and they come and go so quickly that it becomes nearly impossible to fully absorb them all. I told a friend the other day that we used to live in a 48 to 96 hour news cycle, a cycle in which major stories would dominate for 2 to 4 days before being shoved off the front page or the top of the hour by the next major story.
Today we live in about a 2 to 4 HOUR news cycle, and it keeps getting shorter. Some days it feels like a 30 minute cycle, really. So, best rule of thumb: If you see a story that appears to be highly negative to the Trump Administration, wait a couple of days to see if it still has legs. What you’re going to find out is that pretty much none of them do.
But hey, when you are living in fake news media-created alternative universe, that’s not an accident, and it’s really not surprising, is it?
