There would be "outreach" to the Japanese. We would be told that we instigated Pearl Harbor through our "racism". We would be told that we have to "understand" them and respect their "culture". A massive Shinto temple would be constructed over top of the bones of the USS Arizona.
We would invite Japs to America and give them private tours of our security apparatus and train stations and shipyards. Schoolchildren would be instructed in Japanese religious rituals, and taught Japanese prayers.
Far fetched? Not today.
By the end of the week, the outrage of a sneak attack will have been recast as a tragedy with yellow ribbons flying throughout the western seaboard. Meanwhile, FDR would have urged Americans to avoid any backlash against the Japanese.
Youth would be marching in the streets against the American imperialism that had us in the Philippines in the first place, while the State Department rushed to assure Germany that Pearl Harbor would not be used as an excuse to confront the Axis.
