He’s called the vulture and he makes most of his money off foreign bonds. He bought bonds of an old African country (the Congo I believe) that went through a coup for pennies on the dollar because the holder thought they were worthless. Through his connections in government, he got a ruling that the bonds needed to be payed by the new country, Democratic Republic of the Congo (this is from memory). The new country didn’t have a billion to pay so a humanitarian was made by the US and the bonds were paid with that money. He also bought old Argentinian bonds for 50 million and ended up making 850 million.
He’s a billionaire hedgie that doesn’t care about left/right, just how he can use the system to extract money.
You are right. The article goes on to talk about that.
[snip]”The purpose of the Singer call was clear: to smear the reporter whose broadcasts from Africa for BBC Newsnight, The Guardian and Democracy Now! had identified Singer as a “Vulture,” a speculator profiteering from misery, mayhem, corruption and civil war.
Apparently, the Republican Presidential front-runner [Romney] would prefer his sugar-daddies be known as “job creators,” not predators.”
