You've probably heard many misinformed reasons online why the NFL owners are squishy on allowing players to protest during the playing of our national anthem. Aside from the unpredictable, mediocre play coming from players who have yet one more unrelated distraction occupying valuable time during the week all the way up to kickoff, it comes down to two reasons....

They got the money for this years season tickets, that is true.
But if we see erosion of season ticket renewals for next season, that will hurt.
And they are being hurt by the erosion of TV ratings. TV ad revenue is ultimately based on the ratings; on the audience for the games.
If they see a 10-20% decline in season tickets for next year, and similar continuing declines in TV ratings, that will start to pinch them.
Any company that is subsidized by the government is to big to fail. As usual the taxpayer isn’t asked.
The hardcore fans who attend games will keep showing up. Football is a religion to many of them. They’ll yell a few boos and then holler for another beer. The NFL won’t do anything unless tv ratings go into a dramatic and long standing decline.
Geez, that would be fun!
Do like post #4 and see how long that religion lasts. Think shopping malls.
Yeah, like a Craigslist ad. “Yo, I got the sh8ts. NFL tix fo sho discount yo. Trip out whitey and shows up dis Sundayyey wid yo black power threads. Kneel and show da whiteboy beside yo whos da man “
Where does he get the “paid per play” stuff?
Fans spend almost as much for the NFL crap and parking at the stadium as the ticket. These people are taking a big hit and the NFL is going to hear about it.
“A FReeper on another thread floated the idea of reselling or giving tickets to denizens of the hood and watching the subsequent fun. Sounds like an idea that might be worth pursuing.”
Fantastic idea! The NFL loves thug culture so much we should do the favor of giving them what they think they want - HARD.
The real big money comes from the giant TV deals that are based on ratings, not from live attendance at games.
As long as NASCAR ratings keep cratering,I'm betting the NFL will keep turning a blind eye to their own ratings issues (which are due to more than just the anthem controversy).
I wonder how many hardcore fans there are, vs. casual fans.
Off topic a bit, but I’ve gone to many baseball games over the years. Maybe baseball is different than the football crowd.
But I’ve noticed over the years, while baseball attendance has hit record highs in recent years, I don’t think a lot of those people are strong baseball fans.
For example, some will ask me questions as to what happened, when a batter hit a sacrifice fly, and the runners on base advanced. They don’t know that rule of baseball.
Or I overhear comments that someone has to be a really fast runner to get a home run. They don’t understand when the ball is over the fence, he can take his time with his home run trot.
And a lot of people don’t seem to be paying attention to the game, but are playing with cellular phones, and chit chatting about things other than the game.
I recall decades ago, when I was young, going to games and talking baseball with fellow fans, and learning a lot about the game from them. Today’s fans just don’t seem as knowledgeable or interested in the game.
I don’t know if the football crowd is similar. But if a lot of today’s football fans are just casual fans, can take it or leave it, these players protests and fan revulsion of that, could really cause attendance at games to plummet.
Some owners, like the ever cheap and greedy Mike Brown of the Bengals, have negotiated deals where they get a generous cut of parking and concessions, so empty seats do his him in the wallet.
Owners want recurring revenue.
A “long-term steady acute decline” will be _very_ hard to recover from. They’re not going to just sit around waiting for a crash to occur, they’re presumably having some pretty serious arguments with players etc about “don’t **** up our revenue stream just because of some self-righteous ‘protest’ y’all can’t even articulate!”
Seriously overlooked: not only is a significant percentage of viewers moving on to other attractions, but we’re raising a whole generation largely devoid of football. Soccer and other sports are dominating kids’ activities, leading to a lack of interest in NFL-profiting events.
If I had season tickets, I would still go this fall. I might not renew next year.
I never pay too much attention to the pros to begin with. I haven’t watched a full NFL game, end to end, in years. That includes the Super Bowl. I might have it on in the other room..........
That’s pretty much what I’ve done for years, I’ll monitor scores, if it’s late and it’s an interesting game, I may tune in for the last few minutes. Now that the games are streamed online, I can just have the sound on, and do other things, and peek in when it gets interesting.
I think where this is invariably going is to have robots on the field instead of the snowflakes anti-american ungrateful multi-millionaires.
Most of the players are denizens of the hood.
