The killer was a white guy, a Christian by birth if not belief. He was not radical, just a crazed man given the means by the gun lobby to terrorize innocent concertgoers in Las Vegas on Sunday night, shooting to death 59 of them. Stephen C. Paddock was, by all accounts so far, an ordinary American. That is what most terrifies the right.
And so, some on the far right have convinced themselves that Paddock could not be what he seems, what the authorities say he is. They say factsalternative facts, perhapswill inevitably reveal the truth, even as mainstream media outlets do everything they can to skewer that reality, so as not to offend the sensibilities of coastal elites.
This is how America grieves and mourns in 2017.
The lack of certitude about Paddock was conveyed by President Donald J. Trump himself, who on Tuesday was asked if the 64-year-old killer could have been a member or supporter of the Islamic State group (ISIS). There is no evidence whatsoever that that was the case, and although ISIS did attempt to take responsibility for the attack, this was almost certainly what Politico called the terrorist organization's desire for publicity.
The FBI has said ISIS is not responsible for the attack. Senator Richard M. Burr, who heads the Senate Intelligence Committee, similarly asserted that "it doesn't seem to have a terrorism nexus."
And if some international organization were directing Paddock, Trump would have surely known as much from the Presidents Daily Briefing, which would have given him a clear overview of terrorist activity around the world.

There is no such thing, for sure.
Nobody but nobody is a Christian by birth!
The right/NRA doesnt claim responsibility; the left wont accept it.
Ar this point, this guys blabbering is about as useful as any other conspiracy theory.
The vitriolic hatred towards American Christians in particular and Real men in general just oozes from this guy.
Playing to the nutcase base.
And Benghazi was a spontaneous reaction to a YouTube video; and San Bernadino and Ft. Hood were just work place violence from disgruntled workers who ‘snapped’, and the Orlando gay bar was just a right wing homophobe......
These people are so predictable. Were it not that these incidents were such tragic, horrific events, I would say they are comical in response.
The far Left won’t accept that the killer wasn’t the neo-Nazi right-winger they so desperately want him to be, so they just make this stuff up. “Christian by birth if not belief” means that he wasn’t a Christian, which might be one reason that people other than lying leftists don’t accept him as one. Trotsky was Jewish “by birth” and so was Ayn Rand, who loathed him; both were atheists. Adolf Hitler was Catholic “by birth” which didn’t seem to help the Catholics he threw into the camps very much. This whole line of argument is ridiculous.
...An islamist facilitator, as are all criminals, really.
Agreed, to a point. There are some leftists who are believing Christians. I have known a few. But there are also people I would call former Christians or cultural Christians. I insist on having the adjectives there because to cede “Christian” to mean anybody who is not specifically some other religion, is to allow the left to take control of the term, as they have with so many other ones. I’m not giving this one up.
I wonder — did they use this meme when one of their own — James Hodgkinson — did his deed? They could claim white and male for him, but not Christian -— his wife said he wasn’t religious and never went to church.
I don’t have it in front of me now, however it was the same.
Significant if true. Do you have a source?
So, Christian has become an ethnicity then? I can work with that.
Re: THE FAR RIGHT WON’T ACCEPT LAS VEGAS KILLER WAS A CHRISTIAN WHITE MALE
That’s not serious.
First of all, I have never met a white Christian Conservative who even thinks about being white, although I acknowledge that such people do exist.
Most important, one of the central principles of being a white Christian Conservative is that each human being is an individual and that each individual must take full responsibility for his own decisions.
Bottom Line - any random jury of 12 white Christian Conservatives would find Stephen Paddock guilty of mass murder, sentence him to death, and would not lose a minute of sleep on the day of his execution.
He hated country music. He drank and gambled and didn’t go to church. Are you saying he was a Baptist?
Just kidding. Seriously there is absolutely nothing to suggest in any way he was a Christian.
Re: He was an active registered Democrat in Florida.
First time I’ve heard that.
This is from a news source you trust, right?
Re: Now the dog returns to his vomit.
That is LOL wickedness!
But...
He.....
Identified as a:
1) Arab
2) Muslim
3) Terrorist
No, he wasn't.
Just because they make up stuff doesn't mean we can.
But the terms you state which we know to be true are not relevant in the eyes of this foreign sounding writer and his ilk if they believe otherwise.
There are two Stephen Paddock's registered to vote in Florida. Both have different ages and different middle initials.
Not the same guy.
