Back in job market again after end of my current contract. I updated my listings (as a UNIX/LINUX C and C++ expert) on Dice and Monster the other day, and the phone began ringing off the hook.
Well, one recruiter wants to know if I am interested in full time work, direct hire, in Detroit, for the process control of a steel mill whose business is reportedly burgeoning.
This looks like a MAGA move to me, and the recruiter points out that it isn't all decay, there is rebuilding going on too.
My rhetorical question: how crazy does a high tech red neck have to be to make such a move? It can't be all bad -- this is Kid Rock territory after all.
To slum in order to MAGA or not to slum, that is the question.

I’ve had mixed experiences with that, everything from sweet to sour. I’d probably be happiest in an environment where there is regular team coordination (scrums, etc.) no matter how it happens. Somehow I have seemed to be a magnet for the dysfunctional cases. I’ve learned a lot — there isn’t as much room to be a lone ranger in IT as there used to be. IT is a commodity today, even the technologies that used to be loaded with pioneering romance. My last contract, I was working in a situation where the lead programmer was living in yesteryear. Trying to talk to him from the present was a challenge and I finally had enough and let him and his boss know about it. They didn’t blame me for the split.
An interesting story. Don’t think I would like living there.
I was there for the blizzard of '95 (or was it '96?) when some three feet of snow were dumped on Manhattan, Staten Island got it worse. The entire city shut down for several days while the snow was getting cleared out. People were cross country skiing in Manhattan and in Central Park, it was quite a sight.
Crews were working 24x7 to remove the snow, shopkeepers and everyday people were taking coffee and food to the snow removal crews which is something you'd NOT see in Chicago.
New Yorkers bust their asses when they're working, seriously they do. Everything they do seems to be with a sense of urgency to get the job done.
The further west you move across this country that sense of urgency seems to be lost. By the time one gets to California it's soooooooooo laid back.
Anyone who's ever been to New York City and seen how that city works and how hard it works understands President Trump. He truly exemplifies New York City work ethic and culture. For better or worse, he is NYC and NYC is him.
That sense of urgency and brutal honesty is why so many of us elected him isn't it?
Three feet of snow is a LOT. I live in northern Michigan for the last 3-4 years and once we got 16 inches. Whew. That was an incredible amount for us.
I cannot even imagine three feet of snow.
From our perspective you guys and Boston are the cities of hero-making as you seem to get all the really hard weather.
About 4 years ago we got just over 37 inches in one storm. I had a 5 foot snow drift blocking my garage door. Took two sons, two nephews and a snowblower half a day to clear it out.
I was at work the next day. It doesn't come often like that but when it does, we get dumped on.
Just across the IL/IN border at the bottom of lake michigan they get HAMMERED because of the lake effect. We can get literally zero snow here and they'll get two feet. Not kidding. That's only 15 miles from me (I'm pretty close to the border.)

Most dangerous city in the US - four years running.
Yeah... in a similar manner to Chicago. I never met one murderer in all my decades in the Chicago area and neither did any of my friends or neighbors, but in a couple or so zip codes, there were dozens of murders on a weekend.
That said, a combination of renewed Federal vigilance about illegal and criminal immigrants, a reversal of police no-go policies, and gospel outreach to homebodies (even those in jail who won’t be there forever), might put quite a dent in that number.
I could believe it... business trying to get going again, and it’s a fantastic area in terms of resources and connections to do it, but a lot of faint hearts don’t want to go to Detroit.
Well that will separate out the chicken livers to be sure. That makes Detroit the home of either the murderous or the brave.
Hey... if offered a job there on decent terms, I’d go. I’d doubtless get a gun too, but like a wise person gets a fire extinguisher. He hopes he will never need to use it but it can save more than just calling the fire department might.
China consumption would be secondary... at least climate-wise, Detroit is friendly to pianos. Not overly dry even in the winter, pianos will last longer. Wood hates dryness. That’s probably why Steinway has a showroom there.
Now if I could be king of Detroit (dream on) I’d ask why the Grinnell Brothers piano works couldn’t have a second life. And have it OEM a completely USA made Steinway work-alike intro model, like the Boston and Essex are today.
According to Urban Dictionary, along with the usual filth and the catcalls, most dating to a decade or more ago, Detroit is named as the home of rock-and-roll.
Well... Now I’m looking a little further south. Like Gainesville, FL.
I’d go to Detroit, but if I had other choices I might not be so hot about that. Gainesville seems to fit my logistics better. Not in the bag yet, but I have good vibes so far.
