Under California law, guns seized or collected by law enforcement that cannot be returned to their owners can be sold to the public or destroyed.Selling to the public wasn't going to happen by a long shot.

Yeah? Well how many were cherry-picked and went home with government agents and police officers?

They will not be used to commit a crime or used to harm our residents.
What if the rebar is used as a weapon?

Lol! Lets see there were 1,901,768 guns sold in the last 30 days according to the FBI, which equals roughly 44 a minute. So congratulations LA the 4971 guns you destroyed took a whopping 1 hour and 57 minutes for the free market to replace!

Only the best,no doubt.
There was a TJ Hooked episode about a crooked cop (Vic Tayback) and a couple of guys that destroyed scrap metal and sold the weapons.
Not bad for a 80s show.

To zero effect on crime. A completely worthless gesture. Wont save one life or stop one crime. Odds are, 80% of thos guns were near garbage status and would never be used in a crime. Gee, good thing you got that bolt action Jap Arisaka rifle off the streets! Gee, that Hawken percussion single shot was an imminent danger! Good thing that rusted .32 Derringer was turned in.
Idiots.

What a waste. Rebar is generally low quality steel.

Well, certainly there aren’t many serviceable guns in that pile but many of the antique guns could be sold for parts for big bucks.

No, they’ll never be in the hands of criminals, now. Sadly they will also never be in the hands of anyone who’d like to defend themselves against them, either.

Reminds me of some old 1970s TV cop shows in which guns are thrown into the ocean.,
Then there was THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO in which a woman buys a .25 cal pistol, it escapes and goes on a killing spree until the cops catch it and melt it down into a sewer cover.
In other states and counties they are sold at police auction. I’ve seen the public go into a bidding frenzy at these and buy junk guns at new prices.
Our county torches the guns. I can’t stand to watch them torch good S&Ws and Colt 1911s!

"That picture looks more or less like a garbage pile."
It also looks like they are primarily shotguns and hunting rifles.
