It seems that the coffee company Starbucks is forever finding itself embroiled in one storm in a coffee cup after another. Whether its telling its investors that if they dont support Gay Marriage then their money is unwelcome, or allowing their Saudi Arabia branches to ban women from buying coffee; this company is suffering from a delusion that it can enforce its political voice without consequence.
The latest trouble is in Indonesia and Malaysia where Islamic groups (powerful ones, too), have called for mass boycotting of the coffee shops because of their stance on LGBTQ rights; these groups are also petitioning government demanding that their license to operate be revoked. Will Starbucks stand firmly by their principles, or will they cave in, and make politically loaded statements that can be read as distancing themselves from certain causes? It is actually a much larger question Between Islamic rights and Gay rights, which side will win out?
If Starbucks caves in any way to the Islamist demands, they will lose their Western market by being labeled anti-LGBTQ. But if they keep up with the gay rights side, they will almost definitely lose at least two countries of their existing 75 markets (with more to follow no doubt).
This particular issue is actually much larger than what happens to a (a fairly average quality) coffee shop. When we consider what strange companion groups have joined together in the ever present protest against Conservatives (real conservatives, not the groups that claim to be so) and the White Male, it make you wonder how these short term alliances will eventually resolve themselves.

Weren’t they encouraging their employees to write little SJW messages on customers’ coffee cups?
Now there's a novel approach to dealing with the public!
Since the business is asserting their values, they either believe in them or they do not. They made this mess on their own - paraphrasing from the epic fail of the Dixie Chicks, “SHUT UP AND POUR THE COFFEE”
The suggested we “talk about race”.
They are idiots.
.
Dunkin Donuts, founded in Quincy MA in 1950, has eschewed politics to serve a great cup of coffee and dozens of delicious, fattening, carb-loaded, yummy donuts.
They now have 11,300 stores worldwide and still growing.
Imagine! A great cup of coffee without a lecture! :-)
Most companies are smart enough not to trumpet divisive stands on issues. They just want to sell you a product or service. For instance, I have no idea what Hardee’s/Carl’s Junior’s stance on gay marriage, race relations or feminism might be.
I’m beginning to think wealth and intelligence are mutually exclusive.
I never understood what was supposed to happen with the race discussions.
We’re you supposed to hold up the line, and debate race relations and Trayvon and Ferguson and all that with the baristas?? Or were you supposed to turn around and discuss it with the person behind you in line?
7-11 coffee is a lot better and a lot cheaper.

Sorry,but their donuts STINK.
They were good until they drove all of the independents out of business and then they stopped caring.

They make coffee?!!! Who knew? I thought they were a recycling center for Jiffy Lube.
That was their stance on guns (until some idiots portrayed themselves as relentless dangerous pests on company property): do what’s legal, don’t do what’s not, just buy our coffee without deliberately disturbing our customers. Wish they’d do the same with other issues unrelated to brewed beverages (especially issues promoting unsanitary practices).
“... I have no idea what Hardees/Carls Juniors stance on gay marriage, race relations or feminism might be.”
Based on the fine-looking ladies they use in their advertising, I have a pretty good idea!
“Or were you supposed to turn around and discuss it with the person behind you in line?”
God knows what they wanted——definitely one of the worst PR moves ever.

On a related note:
Starbucks occasionally persuades me to answer a survey. A recurring question is “did your server make an effort to get to know you? (answer scale 0-7)” - I’m there to exchange a barcode for a cuppa coffee, not to develop a social relationship with what I would happily trade for a droid.
I think you're supposed to stand there and listen to a lecture about "white privilege," preferably whilst hanging your head in shame.
Anything you might say should take the form of an apology, or signal that you are willing to give your money away.

If anyone wants to “talk about race” just explain that you are a “gray alien” in disguise, so you don’t know what they are talking about... :-)
Most of the major corporations have gone over to the left. They have overlooked the fact that businesses exist for the profit motive.
Starbucks won’t be getting any of my coffee money.
