A safe is a final layer in your security system. ( talking about theft primarily)
Your curtilage perimeter, house int/ext illum and alert, access doors windows & locks, interior alarm w/ video and then the safe.
Usually the exterior stuff is enough to deter most thieves, maybe not in rural areas, then add a fence and a gate with links to your alarms.
I have assisted folks in a comprehensive plan for under $5k. The people in the house are more important than the things, of course, but a system protects all if used.
