Oakland passes resolution asking businesses to create sanctuary workplaces (California)

The Oakland City Council voted unanimously this week on a resolution that asks cities based there to create "sanctuary workplaces" for immigrant workers they may employ.

The resolution asks businesses to abide by the resolution, which “calls upon employers to establish sanctuary workplaces, where workers are respected and not threatened or discriminated against based on their immigration status.”

The issue is a particularly fraught one in industries long reliant on immigrant labor, such as the service industry, manufacturing and construction..

The resolution was written as a way to protect workers who may be worried about an increased crackdown on immigrant communities in the wake of the Trump administration's policies and campaign promises.

“Whether you are a black family who has been here for generations or a black or brown recent immigrant, we all have the right to decide where we call home,” Wei-Ling Huber, the president of Unite Here Local 2850, told local CBS affiliate KPIX.

“When we go to work, we should be valued for the contributions we make, and we should be able to do our jobs free from fear of deportations.”

The issue is a particularly fraught one in industries long reliant on immigrant labor, such as the service industry, manufacturing and construction. Oakland has been booming in all those areas and is in the middle of a building boom.

The neighboring city of Emeryville already has a similar, existing sanctuary statute in place.

"Huber said that as Oakland sees a boom in hotel development, it is important that the future hotels and other workplaces enter the job market as sanctuary workplaces, where hotel housekeepers will not face retaliation based on immigration status," KPIX reports.

And bless those.

It’s so funny though to hear the same arguments as the slave-owners had for keeping their second-class humans.
And the media reporting them in the same favorable way the slave-owners’ media did.
“Progressives”...

I had the GREATEST time in Oakland in 1970 after hitch hiking from Boston.

It was summertime and ALL us hippies were SO footloose and fancy free .... it was an amazing time to be young and alive.

Sorry for the happy note in such a crappy post ....

sighhhh ... I was young once .....

Maybe this is one of the reasons the Raiders are getting out of Oakland.

Some thoughts on illegal immigration:

1. The estimate is 10-20 million undocumented/illegals are in the country now.P>

2. People don't get it. It is not the 10-20 million in the country we need to worry about.

3. Rather, it is the 10-20 million illegals who are waiting to cross the Mexican over the next ten years we need to guard against.

And the 10-20 million who will try after that. And so on.

4. Imagine this happening. Tomorrow, Trump says that all those 10-20 million illegals in the country now will receive legal status and citizenship.

5. Do you really think that such Trump action will stop illegals from trying to cross the Mexican border starting the day Trump grants legal status? I don't think so. They will keep on coming. and coming.

6. Again, one main reason we need strict border control is not just to find the 10-20 million illegals already here. It is also to stop---over the next ten years--- those-—10-20 million illegals who are patiently waiting in Mexico and Central America this very minute to join the 10-20 million illegals already here.

7. Think about this: If Trump made the illegals citizens tonight, April 18, 2017, do you really believe that if you took a walk along the border tomorrow, it would be empty, that is, do you think that no one will ever try to sneak across the border again, because they believe in Trump? Sorry. It won't happen.

True. The death penalty is a more appropriate penalty for treason.

I have no idea what your point is, but I will simply add that I hear Fallujah was a pretty nice place in 1970 . . .

ICE needs to pay attention and use the announcement as guides on where to focus their efforts.
