The Oakland City Council voted unanimously this week on a resolution that asks cities based there to create "sanctuary workplaces" for immigrant workers they may employ.
The resolution asks businesses to abide by the resolution, which calls upon employers to establish sanctuary workplaces, where workers are respected and not threatened or discriminated against based on their immigration status.
The issue is a particularly fraught one in industries long reliant on immigrant labor, such as the service industry, manufacturing and construction..
The resolution was written as a way to protect workers who may be worried about an increased crackdown on immigrant communities in the wake of the Trump administration's policies and campaign promises.
Whether you are a black family who has been here for generations or a black or brown recent immigrant, we all have the right to decide where we call home, Wei-Ling Huber, the president of Unite Here Local 2850, told local CBS affiliate KPIX.
When we go to work, we should be valued for the contributions we make, and we should be able to do our jobs free from fear of deportations.
The issue is a particularly fraught one in industries long reliant on immigrant labor, such as the service industry, manufacturing and construction. Oakland has been booming in all those areas and is in the middle of a building boom.
The neighboring city of Emeryville already has a similar, existing sanctuary statute in place.
"Huber said that as Oakland sees a boom in hotel development, it is important that the future hotels and other workplaces enter the job market as sanctuary workplaces, where hotel housekeepers will not face retaliation based on immigration status," KPIX reports.
First they ask, then they demand. Comply or be fined.

Let’s add the danger of the risk of stink foot from you ignorant scum ...

“They like it on the plantation: dancing, singing. They don’t want the law interfering.”
Californians are so anxious to keep their low-wage slaves.
Isn’t incitement to commit a crime a crime itself?
Oakland is becoming an ongoing criminal enterprise.
they already pigeoned holed the illegals as housekeepers.
“a resolution that asks cities based there”
I thought that Oakland was a city.
Oakland has cities based in Oakland?
What are they going to do when the Feds come knocking.
Or not knocking hopefully.
Typically... Libs ask private citizens to
break the law....
The reporter is pretty (in a 1940’s way) but perhaps not clear in her writing.
Sessions should send US Marshals to Oakland to arrest the city council members.
Sessions should send US Marshals to Oakland to arrest the city council members.
Every street, apartment complex etc should have its mandated "sanctuary area"

What happened to that article 3 of the constitution:
The Third Amendment (Amendment III) to the United States Constitution places restrictions on the quartering of soldiers in private homes without the owner's consent.
Illegal aliens are essentially invaders...that is undocumented soldiers...and should be treated accordingly.
Not all Californians.
Think of the other federal prisoners that would have to share a cell with those stinky hippies.
A walleyed Irish lass.
These illegal sob’s took over California. Arrest these law breaking leeches.
so, is Oakland a sh*thole because it does stupid stuff like this, or does it do stupid stiff like this because it’s a sh*thole?
“Look, they’re bustin’ our balls about this sanctuary jit and we’d still like to provide it but .... well .... would YOU break the law FOR us? ... I mean, we’d really appreciate it and all, y’know?”
the voters put them there. blaming jackass politicians for being jackasses is a waste of time. the original problem is jackass voters.
not to mention the fact that I’m positive that would be brazenly unconstitutional. not to say the idea doesn’t have it s appeal despite that . . .
