Alcohol & tobacco taxes hurt victims. It does not discourage behavior, it hides & substitutes worse behavior.
Taxation destroys, get used to it. The only question is how.

Taxation destroys
Sure enough...
But, alcohol kills people, including the users and their victims. Alcohol is also very expensive for those who have to pony up to pay the bills incurred by the user and the victims. So, while taxes can be expensive, the "taxes" being paid at the back end can be a lot more expensive, for victims and users and for those not directly involved, since, they too will be paying for the bills and other expenses associated with alcohol and drugs, etc.
It's like the old saying goes: "pay me now, or pay me later".
Sometimes, what you don't see directly can be a lot more expensive in the end.
Get used to it, since you'll be paying, no matter if by taxes or by government spending or by bigger bills at the doctor or hospital or via your medical insurance premium. So, why would you want to pay for someone else's bad habits?
