Mexico again says there is 'no way' it will pay for Trump wall

MEXICO CITY (REUTERS) - Mexico’s new Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray said on Tuesday (Jan 10) there is no way his country will pay for the wall that US President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to build on the United States’ southern border to keep out illegal immigrants.

“There’s no way that could happen,” Videgaray said on Mexican television a few days after his appointment. “There are no circumstances...not even the best possible trade deal, investments, support which would justify taking a step that would violate the dignity of Mexicans to such an extent.”

The wall has been a bone of contention between Trump and Mexico since the businessman launched his presidential campaign in June 2015, accusing Mexico of sending rapists and drug dealers across the border into the United States.

Trump said on Friday that Mexico would repay the United States for the wall, a day after news emerged that the New Yorker’s transition team was exploring getting the Republican-led Congress to vote to approve the funding....

I’ve always felt that drug users HATE themselves, and the drugs help them get through the day. Take away the drugs and they would probably suicide themselves.

But take away the drugs and they might realize they need help, and that opens an opportunity to reach them with Christ.

Negative. 50% surcharge or tariff if unable or unwilling to prove citizenship or legal presence.

I want Mexico to pay for the wall but part of me wants to make American democrats pay for the wall too. Maybe for just a few miles of it.

Which came first, the addict or the pusher?

You got me there.

I tend to think that the pusher, er, tries to spread his/her wings and offers "prime targets" cheap/free drugs, just to try out and have fun. THEN, once the fools suckers pathetic souls are hooked, s/he moves on to fresh, new pastures.

I understand these vermin pushers hang out at bus terminals, shelters, cheap hotels, KNOWING where the, er, weakest links might hang out.

But, I don't really know the answer. Maybe priests/reverends could give you a better answer.

“They REALLY need Jesus.” True. Young people who are attracted to drugs need to imitate the sober, happy Americans:
1 church a week, 2 family vacations a year, 3 sports a week, 4 homework help from parents a week, 5 family dinners a week and always tell the truth at 12 am midnight to parents. Always. Then drugs go away.

YEP.

This great and wonderful new wall will have a deep footer completely underground, so that alone is a deterrent to burrow. The other good news is we can fill their amateurish tunnels with rebar and concrete far faster than they can dig them.

Walls don't work. We learned ALL ABOUT WALLS from the failed Berlin Wall, didn't we?

Sounds like a plan but I think that the tortured souls would then turn to booze. They need a change of heart.
Perhaps if we had some more POSITIVE examples of good behavior, NOT to be found in Hollyweird, things might change.

Young Americans could also do with TWO parents, never divorced, with extended family of same background, who were REGULAR Church/Temple attendees. GOOD ROLE MODELS would help, not the drug-divorce-sex-multiple partner-feel good culture we have now.

Maybe I'm wrong.

Berlin Wall was designed to keep decent people in.
Our wonderful border wall is to keep criminal invaders out.
There is a big difference between the two.

Ways he could make Mexico pay for it:
* increase cost of legal visas, use that toward construction
* tax on remittances
* apply fines charged to individuals or the home nation for each illegal immigrant
* bill Mexico for the care and feeding of its citizens, especially those in prison
* for the few he may legalize, apply massive financial penalties, say that money is for a wall
* import duties on Mexican goods with money to go for the wall/border enforcement

Just ending Mexico’s ready aid to Central Americans trafficked to the US will help. Nearly all of those “unaccompanied minors” of the past two summers were from Central America, not Mexico, and received 3 day travel passes through Mexico for a fee.
Mexico’s own immigration law is more than Pat Buchanan has ever wanted.

All true.

However, the Berlin Wall, which still has a piece up to remind folks of what was, was TINY compared to what the Mexico-USA border wall would be, that is, 1,933 miles long.
Thus the comparison stops with that number. Seriously, a wall almost 2000 MILES long? Can you IMAGINE what our border patrol numbers would have to be to monitor that behemoth of a wall?

Besides, the Berliners were arriving for FREEDOM. The Mexicans only come in for jobs. They aren't here to be U.S. citizens. They love their country and have no plans other that $$$$ plans.
BIG DIFFERENCE in motive too.

AND the Germans united into ONE country again. HUGE difference in motives for Germany and Mexico. The Mexicans come to TAKE. Period. The Germans wanted a new, non-Communist life, that is, FREEDOM.

All true. Central America is a MESS.
If we help THEM, we end up helping ALL of Central AND South America. When does it end?

Mexico was DELIGHTED to pass along the down and out of C.A. to US.

The tormented people of East Germany were motivated for GOOD reason to flee that terrible situation.
Our big and beautiful wall will have GATES where visitors with lawful intentions can cross legally into our country.

That’s the reason why so many Mexican immigrants don’t even speak Spanish - they are the literally poor indigenous that Mexico doesn’t want and can’t assimilate.
We’re their social pressure relief valve.

There could be a tax on the remittances sent to Mexico, which total $22 billion a year.

That's the mother lode. Tax the hell out of the remittances at every Western Union terminal, and not one penny of US taxpayer money will be needed to build the wall.

DO IT!!!

TRUE.

Our big and beautiful wall will have GATES where visitors with lawful intentions can cross legally into our country.
I see. How will our Customs officials KNOW which visitors have LAWFUL intentions? Do we give them ouija boards or crystal balls? Do we give those thousands of daily visitors lie detector tests every day they cross the Line to work?

How do our Customs officials know if the folks they let in have criminal records or not? Do the Customs officials trust them NOT to tell the tiniest lie?

You are CLUELESS, I'm sorry to say.
My uncle (mother's brother) worked in Nogales, Arizona, for Customs. He not only worked the Line, he inspected Mexican trains coming in as well.
I lived in Mexico City for two years and used to visit my uncle every three months to keep the visitor visas on my car and myself active and valid. OF COURSE the Mexican government COULDN'T coordinate the two so I only had to come to the border every six months....OH NO, that would have been MUCH too simple.

The "big" (1933 miles) wall is a pipe dream. Building it would be FAR too expensive. Keeping it in one piece would be ENDLESSLY expensive with newer and bigger and more clever tunnels being dug DAILY.

THOUSANDS of Mexicans cross the Line and back DAILY for work in the USA. The US loves hiring the Mexican WOMEN for the "daily" work because they will work for FAR FEWER pesos.

I remember a famous U.S. LUGGAGE company hired THOUSANDS of Mexican women right across the Line in Mexico. The women were HOME in their own country and were getting ALMOST U.S. wages. There were no silly social security payments, unemployment benefits, accident/injury claims to bother the U.S. companies. Everyone was a winner.

It that your idea of your "big and beautiful wall" with GATES and lawful intentions? Lol.

DREAM ON!

Sorry, but that is baloney.

The Mexican government set out on a HUGE literacy quest for ALL Mexicans, WAY back in the 1950-60's. Mexicans ARE literate. The poor indigenous CAN read and write.

OFF-TOPIC:
I remember visiting the Yucatan Peninsula way back when. There had ALREADY been Catholic priests and nuns who had been there ahead of us, WAY ahead of us.
They came into the very (then) isolated area on MULES.

HORSES were big and strong but were frightened easily with gunshot...NOT the bravest of animals. They would not protect their riders and would run away at the sounds of gunshot.

BURROS/donkeys were small and strong and were frightened of NOTHING. But they were too small for riding. They were fearless but way too small to be useful for the riders.

The hybrid: MULES.
MULES had the size and strength of horses and the disposition of burros/donkeys: PERFECT creatures for the Catholic priests and nuns. Those mules PROTECTED their riders and would NOT be intimidated. THEY would fight back!
