Well before NAFTA. In 1964 Mexico set up the Maquiladora program which was basically a Mexican government effort to lure US factories into northern Mexico with cheap labor and other enticements. The first paragraph of a Wiki article explains it pretty well.

In 1964, the Bracero Program, which allowed Mexican agricultural workers to work legally in the U.S. on a seasonal basis, came to an end. Less than a year after the end of the Bracero Program, the Mexican Government launched the Border Industrialization Program (BIP) or the Maquiladora Program, to solve the problem of rising unemployment along the border.[2] The maquiladoras became attractive to US firms due to the availability of cheap labor, devaluations of the peso and favorable changes in US customs laws.[citation needed] In 1985, maquiladoras overtook tourism as the largest source of foreign exchange, and since 1996 they have been the second largest industry in Mexico behind the petroleum industry.[3]

The Mexicans should buy enough fords to justify a plant there. The reason Toyota and so many other carmakers produce them here is because we are their biggest customers and we demand it - not because they love us or are worried about the plight of American workers.

Soon-to-be President Trump isn't/didn't tell any of these American-based companies that they couldn't do business in whatever country(ies) they wanted. That they couldn't be in business. That they couldn't make a profit.

But, if these same companies want to take advantage of slave labor/indentured servants/corrupt unions, in foreign countries at the cost of American citizen jobs, and then sell back those ridiculously cheap(ly) made products, to that same American consumer, for a profit -- well, there's the rub.

There should be a severe penalty, under the law, for any American corporation that wants to profit from cheap foreign labor at the cost of American citizen jobs (we're looking at you Microsoft, Ford, GM, Chrysler, IBM, et al).

So, build your automobiles, refrigerators, tractors, computers, medicines, whatever, in any country you want, but your profit margin, here, will be smaller and your taxes/tariffs that much more.

Capitalism should have consequence. For everyone. I love trade, but fair trade, not just free trade.

I am really really sorry for this fellow but...he has to realize that USA needs MILLIONS of its former jobs restored, brought back, replaced..you name it....
we have nearly 100 million unemployed adults, the most in our entire national history ....
after we get more of our own people job opportunities again, we can discuss projects with Mexico... right now, we need to fix Obama’s damage to USA as our “JOB ONE” (to quote Ford)
