Apparently you need to do both increase mass and create a magnetic field. Mars already has a slight magnetic field, but it's not strong enough to protect it.

Sending a comet or asteroid into orbit, thus making a moon could help with the magnetic field.

can we create a magnetic field for Mars

Going to Mars is for countries that have a balanced checkbook. We’re about $100 trillion in debt. You wanna go to Mars you pay for it. Uncle Sam is all tapped out.

Mars has two moons but they are small-probably why there is such a slight magnetic field...
