Californias desire to combat so-called global warming has led it to attack what it believes is deadly even if it is often silent cow flatulence.
According to an AP report, the self-proclaimed leading agricultural state is now focusing on what it calls greenhouse gases produced by dairy cows.
In spite of opposition from farmers, California Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation that regulates heat-trapping gases from livestock businesses for the first time.
Cattle and other farm animals produce methane, a gas that is referred to as a greenhouse gas and alleged to be more potent than carbon dioxide as a heat-trapping gas. Methane is released when cows belch, pass gas, and make manure.
If we can reduce emissions of methane, we can really help to slow global warming, said Ryan McCarthy, of the California Air Resources Board, which is drawing up rules for the new law.
Livestock are said to be responsible for 14.5 percent of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, according to a 2013 United Nations report.
Since passage of its global warming law in 2006, California has been reducing carbon emissions from automobiles, homes and factories.
The new California law aims to reduce methane emissions from dairies and livestock businesses to 40 percent below 2013 levels by 2030, McCarthy said.
One way the state plans to reduce the amount of gas passed by cows is in requiring farmers to feed them a specific diet designed to produce less gas.
State regulators also want more farmers to reduce emissions with what are called methane digesters, which use storage tanks to capture methane from manure and convert the gas into electricity.
Farmers are decrying the added expense in what is already one of the most expensive states in the country to do business and in a year when drought has caused even greater expense than usual.
The bottom line is its going to negatively impact the economics of the California dairy industry, said Arlin Van Groningen, a third-generation farmer. In the dairy business, the margins are so slim that something like this will force us out of the state."
I had to check it...
Sure enough.
I heard there were 2,000 dairies in that great state, now reduced to 1500. Soon half will move and half will stop dairy farming. Prices will rise on milk products in Ca. The middle class will continue moving out of state leaving the rich and poor.
I predict a progression from cows to humans. The California socialist want to have their nose in everyone’s business.
I wonder if these socialist morons have considered that the cow farts caused by methane will happen whether it comes from inside the cow’s gut or when it’s source gets dropped out in the form of cow pucky. Seems to me, the answer is to let mother nature work to our advantage by having all that cow pucky produce methane for clean energy.
You don’t know Jerry Brown...
The entire Los Angeles Basin should be excised from humanity and given to Mexico. Even the white people there aren't worth saving. Just a passel of narcissistic a$$holes who have managed to ruin California. The rest of us need to build a wall on on the Angeles Crest to keep them from ruining the rest of the state.
Yup. Actions have consequences.
Don't blame it on the onion, cow farts just may be the cause of tears in "your" eyes < /s >
It’s a gas tax.
Fines and citations (in traffic and elsewhere) have gotten to be confiscatory for revenue purposes.
The fines are assessed on those most able to afford them.
It isn’t about crime or violation, it’s about overcoming funding shortfalls.
Assessing fines for all illegal aliens could force self-deportation and providing funding to offset expenses but it won’t be tried because they are the target for such monies (even though they wire BILLIONS “home” every year).
It's just as I suspected - they can't control it, obviously, but they can make money off of it by fleecing the farmers.
I read that cows do not fart methane. Cows burp methane. Climate control freaks have been studying the wrong end of the cow.
“If my wife and I could tolerate the weather in Texas (near Austin), we would gladly leave California. Just more nonsense we need to live with. It wasnt like this 50-60 years ago.”
I’m an NBT (native born Texian) and I can tell you the weather sucks here. You will be much happier in your beloved Calie. So, stay put - please. You’ve already ruined Colorado, Oregon and Washington. Nuffs enough.
A $1,000 fine for throwing a frisbee in a frisbee-free zone? Wow. Jokes aside, I presume that rules on things like frisbees are probably a response to overcrowding. (?) But the tariff seems a bit steep, especially for an activity for which the location tends to drift.
California doesn’t need food. This is liberalism at it’s finest.
One of the reasons that dairies have been popping up all the Texas Panhandle for several years. From what I am told, they are all from California.
Soon, we will have to buy fart chits from the open market for the Church Beans and Bingo Night..
I'm sure there are farmers in Wisconsin who will gladly take up the production. California will lose their dairy farmers and milk will double in price (at least) due to added transportation costs.
The legislation will read, “No cow will be allowed to fart more than 30 cubic feet at STP during any twelve hour sliding window”. Enforcement will be done using graduated plastic bags stuck up their butts.
