- All Internet routing is based on IP Addresses - Domain Name Service (DNS) translates a host (www) and domain (freerepublic.com) into an IP address (209.157.64.201) - If you know the IP address you can often go directly to page by pasting IP into URL bar then Enter - Most large companies have geographically dispersed servers with multiple IP addresses to get to their site
So... how do you find an IP address? This command:
nslookup www.____________.com
fill in ______________ with domain. Keep in mind this is not restricted to www so if you have mail.__________.com it will work too
Windows - Start then "cmd" Enter
MAC - Open Terminal Application
- In Command window type "nslookup" then Enter - At new prompt type anything you would type into URL bar (one at a time) - Copy IP Address(es) - Repeat - "exit"
This will not work if there is a DNS outage so you may want to do this now for search engines, social media, bank, etc.
Advanced information: If you are in Internet outage and did not do this beforehand you can attempt to use other DNS servers.
At the nslookup prompt (>) type "server x.x.x.x" then Enter another DNS server IP. common ones are:
8.8.8.8 4.2.2.2 4.2.2.1
from there use same nslookup commands as above.
If one of these works you could temporarily overwrite you local DNS server and use it in your computer's network properties.
Good Luck
Sorry... did not post as clean as I hoped. I am not as good at HTML as IP addressing.
Thanks for the post!
You can load your router or your computer with a list of DNS Servers
That solves dns attack issues, unless they attack all of them
Can you distill this info specifically to free republic? If SHTF, this site is where we need access to the most.
If we had an American government, these attacks would be history.

Helpful post.
Does anyone know if there are contingency plans for long term Internet outages that will allow some degree of FR availability, news update and messaging capability?
Shortwave HF / VHF mail / message board / http://www.winlink.org/ ?
I did some searching and can’t find much on this topic.
Would be good to stay in touch and update fellow FReepers of UN MRAP convoy sightings and FEMA camp Red list roundups ;n)
Seriously, what shortwave stations - frequencies would be good to monitor?
Thanks for the info. Saving for future ref.
you can also just ping from the command prompt and it will tell you the ip
ping freerepublic.com
