I move in social and business circles in which there is clear disdain for Trump. These people caricature Trump.supporters as uneducated and unsophisticated. I’m employed in management and have an advanced degree. These people might be shocked that someone such as myself, the opposite of their caricature, would support Trump. I keep quiet about it so they don’t know who I’m going to vote for. I’m Betting there is a lot of quiet support and people don’t want to argue or be hassled about their political choice.

Yes; people just don't want to argue about it. Also:
fear of signs of being stolen and homes and yards vandalized, or, especially in the case of bumper stickers, with ones car being keyed
The latter is the main reason that my household has no signs, here in the Freak State. But, I bet a similar principle is functioning in many of the polls...:-)
