Obviously, the leftists would like that definition to stick because they think they can win with it.
Is it "in reality has devolved towards progressivism"?
Alt-right has fallen into some authoritarian traps, and to that extent could be regarded as sharing "progressive" opinions, but it's mostly baloney. Conservatives are trying to define the alt-right just like the progtards are.
Who elected Russel Kirk the Moses of THE "10 Conservative Principles"?
He got there by virtue of being in early. He stayed there by virtue of movement conservatives -- especially William F. Buckley Jr. -- who regularly purged "heretics." JBS was an early target, as were all forms of libertarianism. [I think there is a secret codicil in WFB's will that requires NR to continue to do one hit piece on Ayn Rand per year.]
Look how the term now being scrutinized and time dedicated -- even here.
It's been building for some weeks. Facebook and other social media chatter before the attack was focused on Steve Bannon. Mother Jones ran an article about how Breitbart News was now a legitimate outlet for "racism" about a week ago.
The thing is, it's not even new. Every Republican in my lifetime except Eisenhower has been painted with this brush. Paul Ryan (for example) is kewl-down with these attacks now: of all people in the world, he should be most ashamed of himself for aligning with the race card tossers. Just four years ago he was branded by Zero's operatives as a racist himself.
I'm not Alt-Right myself, although, as you say there is a lot to agree with there (as well as some important and fundamental points to disagree with.) But one tactic they use which I agree with and have embraced myself in the last year: they don't care what names you call them. We shouldn't either. And we shouldn't be attacking any other movements as long as "progressivism" remains to be destroyed.
One war at a time.
It's not only that, but I perceive more "edginess" to their commentary. They seem to be more "Simon Peter" and less "Luke."
I get the feeling that they are the sorts that would man the barricades and go toe to toe with the left in the streets if necessary. (Yes, I know "Man the Barricades" is a leftist thing, but you get the point.)
Don't think that's the issue for them; Just creating a meme. ANY meme. Any fire. Any smoke for the pods to follow instead of Hillary's series of political Dresdens.

This alt-right fight over definition is bait. We've already figured out it's nothing but false-flag intellectual chum.
Any paradigm of rules and law can be construed as "totalitarian". Agree. The progs seem to want to blur lines of political demarcation.

I guess by virtue of his early standing, by default Kirk win the "Moses" status. So they were the one who de-legitimatized the JBS from "conservative" status? So there went the baby with the bathwater? Lol@ the Ayn Rand crack.

The Bannon hit in any case was predictable. FB and its co-prog snake pits like Mo-Jo will be screeching "racism" and tainting with suspicion any molecule associated with Trump every day until the election. I doubt they'll change "hearts and minds."

Every Pubbie must by default face the charge of "racism" from Dems. Someone like Ryan backed up just enough to let the Dems know he would play ball. Paul Ryan is an unprincipled Globalist-Firster who plays for the other team in any case. He should be ashamed by his own treachery and political transvestism, but seems proud and content to make it known that he's a tool whose "service" is available at the right price.

We should simply label ourselves "conservative" based on:
1)Pro-America First
2) Pro-Life/Pro Family
3) Pro-2A
4) Pro-Sovereignty (Person/State/Nation)
5) Pro-Small Gummint
Everything else can be added as an addendum.
To begin humoring the Left's obsession on "alt-right" is BS that automatically puts the entire Right on the defensive. It's a mouse-trap for idiots. FB and Mo-Jo need to be told to take a hike to the Clinton Foundation HQ.
