I got into a verbal "discourse" with someone on Youtube onetime.
Typical punk know it all, disparaging the video poster and others.
Then the person said they were a doctor...blah, blah, blah
I clicked on their name and found their Youtube page, and found out that the person was big into gaming.
He also had a Google+ page. And made a comment to someone else about some game or gaming device, that they both had. He had mentioned that he lived in the same area of London as this person he was talking to.
Went back to the original Youtube video, where this punk was trashing everybody. Told him he was no doctor, but a young punk gamer from London. His response was that he had never been to London.
I then referenced the area he quoted that he lived in, and his Google+ page, and that anybody who really knew anything about computers, could follow someone's electronic trail.
I suggested that he leave the discussion and erase all his entries. Within an hour, he had disappeared.
I'm not computer savvy, so I don't know how to really trace someone's internet footsteps. I just did some basic, open to the public scanning of social media and happened to find a reference he made. Probably spent 2-3 minutes total.
Scared the crap out of him.
But I imagine we all have fairly open information out there.
Heck, here on FR, most all of us identify the states we are in, on our home page.
Facebook, people mention their hometowns or the schools they went to. From there just type stuff into Google and you'll get all types of hits. Address, phone numbers, former addresses (such as schools), relatives...
That is just what normal people can find.
Imagine trained investigators, with their added knowledge and resources can do more...in less time.
