The territory of Wyoming (now the state of Wyoming) was named after the Wyoming massacre. The congressman who first proposed the name was a Pennsylvania native. There were several other names proposed but that one won out.

Thanks for adding that factoid. FWIW, I was born in the Great State of Wyoming, which is arguably the best run State in the Union.

Thank you for that information.

I am a native Marylander, but I had forbearers who settled in Luzerne County, Pennsyvania, and, in doing ancestry research, I have come across the place name Wyoming. Kept meaning to — but forgetting to — look it up since it clearly was there before the state of Wyoming.
