This was who he had in mind with that much-hyped tweet this weekend that had everyone wondering if Romney had reconsidered? An NRO writer? Trump fans are forever deriding #NeverTrump as a movement consisting of, like, six guys at National Review and the Weekly Standard. And now here we are.
Im not sure about Frenchs net worth but Id guess hes 0-for-3 on those criteria given that the sort of vast wealth needed to run a national campaign runs into the hundreds of millions of dollars. As it turns out, Kristol actually touted French as a potential independent candidate in a piece published in the Standard just a few days ago. No one put two and two together this weekend, though, presumably because, um, no one thought he could possibly be serious.
Yeah, its an especially rough spot for an unknown to be in too given how many other, much bigger names have been floated before him, from Romney to Ben Sasse to Adam Kinzinger. Theres a sense that, having exhausted everyone on the teams depth chart, youre now pulling fans out of the stands to play QB. Im not sure either what the value is in picking a conservative challenger to Trump whos even less well known than Gary Johnson is.
But lets not overthink it. The goal here may be less about mounting a traditional campaign than simply giving the media a pretext to broadcast an anti-Trump message from the right. No reporters going to reprint an attack on Trump by conservative pundit David French; an attack by conservative candidate David French is a different story.

This #### is REALLY getting under my skin.
If I wasn’t such a peace lover and Christian the only thing that would beat this guy to the ER would be the lights on the ambulance.
Thank goodness Christ lives in me.

This should go real far... He’s got as much name recognition as I do.
French would make himself look like a clown if he ran.
Everyone would see it as an attempt to elect Hillary.
So Billy Kristol (quasi intellectual comedian) contends he needs to leave the party to save the party. Kinda like I was for something before I was against something, or having a binder full of women. Kristol needs to register as a 527 working for Hillary - because that is exactly what will happen. So....Kristol supports the Democrats and Hillary by engineering a third party Independent candidate to some day save the GOP after 8 years of Hillary. Is there a straight line to this logic somewhere?
I thought it might be Erik Erikson. lol
I know nothing about French except a couple tidbits from his bio and they look good. But I will not vote for anybody young Kristol sponsors. He’s ruined his daddy’s magazine and now he’s just trying to get Hillary or Bernie into the White House. He’s made a complete jerk of himself with this b s
Bill Kristol is mental.
I wonder if the GOP is going to invest any money at this guy.
What a losing proposition. Kristol is out of his mind.
“Billy Kristol (quasi intellectual comedian) “
I think you give Billy too much credit there; a more accurate description would be “pseudo quasi intellectual comedian”.
I hope people give this French guy hell if he decides to run as a spoiler to put Hillary in office.
If French lasts till November, I bet he finishes behind Gary Johnson.
Bill Kristol just proved himself to be more of a joke than anyone imagined and that is an accomplishment. I can’t wait till Trump monologs this. :-)
He won’t last that long; hell, he won’t even last a month; if he does even get in!
Essentially, Trump’s bringing a flamethrower to a stick fight with Neo Con/Clintoon lover Kristol/
“Who am I? What am I doing here”?
Mitt Romney is knee deep in this BS too. He’s already be a loser for us. Seems we flush and flush but he still won’t go down.
From the little research I’ve done, he’s a big Mitt Romney supporter.
If the clown wanted to run, he should have done so early in the republican primary. He’s just playing the spoiler role for Mitt and Kristol.
