He never saw city blacks getting their first taste of the boonies in boost camp. They wanted to stay on trails, roads were better. Sending one out on “snake patrol” was always good for huge laughs.
I knew a guy that took a group of inner city prisoners(local program offers early release) into the woods for Menasha. Trapping boomers, I think. He briefed them about the job, and told them the most dangerous thing out there were “timber tigers.” Chipmunks, to the locals. He said “If you hear one, head for a slash pile(which would be full of them), jump up and down, yell, and for God’s sake, cover your balls.” Hilarity ensued when the first chipmunk went off.
