Sorry, but YES THEY CAN. The GOPe isn't called the Stupid Party for nothing. I lose track of how many times they've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. They aren't concerned what a Clinton presidency would do to the country, not as long as they get to maintain their place at the public trough of taxpayer money and retain their power. That's all they care about and the rest of us can be damned to hell.
Your “sources” probably have no clue about this. If this were true, it means that each and every primary and caucus was worth nothing. Do you think the GOP is really going to risk deeply offending all of those folks who participated???

They apparently don't get the point that people are blindly furious at all of their betrayals and dishonesty, hate the GOP-E with a purple passion, and are not going to take it any more. We are probably closer to Civil War than at any time since 1865. They ought not to push their luck.
I don't like TRUMP!!! but if he EARNS the nomination (as opposed to Moral Monster Mitt Romney having bought the 2012 nomination with corrupt $$$$$), he gets the nomination whether they like it or not. If the GOP-E tries to steal the nomination and TRUMP!!! has earned that nomination, the GOP-E will have to face a lot of TRUMP!!!'s skeptics and even enemies who are conservative in addition to TRUMP!!!'s legions of committed supporters.
The GOP-E will, of course, abandon his candidacy as they have abandoned those few candidacies not to their liking. They will cooperate with the Demonrat enemy since the Demonrats can be bought on issues of interest to the corporate elite shills and the GOP-E really does not give a shit what the Demonrats will do to SCOTUS, our foreign policy, to the babies, to the 2nd Amendment, to Americans who work with their hands for a living, and will continue to align with the Demonrats as long as they continue policies to line Muffie's trust fund at the expense of everyone else.
On the evidence to date, TRUMP!!! may not only be nominated but he may actually be elected. His supporters are NOT inclined to listen to reason. They are terminally angry and, so long as they believe TRUMP!!! can win and will do what they hope, they will walk through walls for him. If he betrays their inflated expectations as POTUS, then there will be another opportunity for revolution.
We can do without guillotines and a second round of the French Terror of the 1790s and maybe the nation will come to its senses, or maybe TRUMP!!! will instinctively be a better POTUS than I and conservatives expect him to be or maybe he will close the border, deport the worst offenders, be at least knowledgeably pro-life on judicial appointments whatever he may actually believe, cut the job losses that result from these ill-conceived trade deals. If he should just do those, he will be as big a hero as Ronaldus Maximus and against a greater degree of difficulty.
The Status quo MUST END.
