I recall a post years ago where we HAD to label vanity posts with “VANITY” just so you could see it, and avoid it.
Sure thing! JimRob can just turn F/R into Lucianne.com where they don’t allow them.
The purpose of a vanity post as I see is to cut through the biased media with new perspective.
That’s what I do with my vanities.
Look at the news a new way.
Post news articles and commenting is fine I do that too, but those news articles are from biased MSM and RINOSM media.
Breaking News is cluttered with a lot of political propaganda-spin, much of it pro-Donald Trump.
I think the occupation protest in Oregon was worthy of Breaking News treatment when it started, but it was taken down quickly on Saturday January 2nd.
In general stories about Oregon even when posted from MSM sources quickly have topics like “front page news” removed also in this forum.
I understand.
Should have written, “MARK” posts as vanity. That way we are forewarned.
I do not want to censor. But many (not all) are a waste of time.
You should post them in chat, where they belong.
And I would agree with that standing rule. It’s nice to have filter options for those who don’t want to participate. After all, they are just rants and/or opinion posts. But scrubbing them probably isn’t the best way to attract participation and paying members (outside the general rules of profanity, etc of course).
FR tries to stay focused. I wouldn’t like 18 zillion categories to choose from. Every once in a while though, it’s good and even fun to read a a persons rant.
I respectfully disagree.
I think that is the function of the comments.
Your views may not be my views. I do not “need” anyone else to post a vanity to explain the news to me. As I wrote, I say this as a general point of discussion—not as a personal attack.
I am OK with rants. I just like to know that is what I am reading. Look at the messes that come up when someone posts from a blog. It can get brutal.
Free Republic used to be one of the best, most diverse, news aggregator sites on the Internet. It is not that anymore if we have to wade through five vanities about how “you” felt about the debate. (Again, I use “you” as a general term, not specifically you.)
I know there are people who disagree with me. That’s fine. I can be somewhat irritating at times. I have thick skin.
I like vanity posts. Keep ‘em coming.
I do think each vanity should cost a 5 dollar contribution to FR.
Good morning, Johnny Reb. Is it cold in the shack? :-)
You can serve both ends. I get a lot out of vanity posts, in that they often render news of a more alternative sort.
We have a news category, and there is excellent technology out there in the way of aggregating free news, categorizing it, and then deploying it in any number of ways.
Its a direction that Jim and the others that make this site could go in should the choose too. Mission creep, however, is a concern.
One of the major reasons why I rely on this site for news is that reliable, relatively unedited news is very hard to come by. I still find myself coming here for it despite the increase in vanities. If the vanities appeared in a place where vanities were welcome - like in their own category - it would likely solve the problem.
Don't forget the:
1. prayer requests from strangers on the internet for every minor problem in life
2. recipe requests
3. what gun should I buy?
4. my kids/cat/dog did this today! so cute lol :)
....and so on and on.
Ouch. That’s cold for down there.
I call it “Yankee” weather.
-9 here. We call that February.
Go suck an Egg
