Abdul- Jabbar’s racism shows through with his attack on Dirk Nowitzki
Coach is Right ^ | 2/11/16 | Kevin "Coach" Collins

Recently we’re reminded of the jealousy and hatred some Black athletes feel toward White players who excel in a sport Blacks think they own. The stream of racist bile from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar directed toward the Dallas Mavericks’ future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki is a handy example of this.

When asked about Nowitzki’s shot, Jabbar launched into a stupid and unsupportable racist attack on Nowitzki’s accomplishments as an NBA player.

“You asked about Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk Nowitzki’s shot is very hard to block, but I don’t think that he was able to have a dominant career because he couldn’t do other things. If he could have shot like that and rebounded and played defense and blocked shots, then he would have been all-around, and he would have gotten more credit. He was like a one-trick pony. You want guys that can shoot like that on your team. I’m not saying that he lacked value, but he would have been considered at a higher level if he had done more on the court other than just shoot the ball.”

For the record, Dirk Nowitzki, who was a ninth pick, is now the only player to amass 25,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 1000 blocks, 1000 3 point baskets and 1000 steals. He has been an NBA champion and League MVP. Nowitzki is a 13 time All- Star. He was the first Maverick voted to the All-NBA team and along with Jabbar, Nowitzki is one of only two players to have four consecutive 30 point, 15 rebound playoff games.

It is pretty clear that Jabbar hasn’t really kept up with...

Sorry, didn’t see where he called him out because he’s white.

I’m not a fan of Abdul Jabbar. But I don’t see anything overtly racist in his analysis Dirk.

As a PHX Suns fan I sure would have loved to have had Dirk on any of our teams. Guy often was just unstoppable.

I saw a distinct lack of respect for the man as a player but nothing that referred to his race. Big nothing burger there.

I took him to mean that in his era, Dirk would have been expected to do more.

Check out Jabbar in the movie Airplane where he tells the kid to have his dad haul Walton and Lanier up down the court all night...

Kareem is a racist, but I don’t think his comments here were based on race.

That was extremely funny, esp. when he denies being Kareem.

Lew Alcindor has always been a jerk. I used to attend a lot of Seattle Supersonic games back in the 70's and we usually ended up in the court side chairs.
During one game against the Lakers, Sonics rookie center Tom Burleson had the ball and was backing into Alcindor when Lew threw a knuckle shot sucker punch from behind to Burleson's temple and knocked him out cold. This was 10 feet in front of us. No ejection - just a "punching foul" and some free throws for the victim.
Not a huge incident, but a demonstration of Alcindor's character that stayed with me.

Coach is very often wrong, but at least this one is of little import.

On the issue of / KAJ his view is no more or less important than any other ex-players.

One would of course wonder had KAJ not fist been coached by J.Wooden at UCLA then left the Bucks for LA then had Irvin Johnson and AC Green et al and an era of the NBA that really wanted the Lakers vs Knicks/Celtics/Bulls in the finals. If he would be a remembered as he is now.

Of course that is the issue if things are not the same they are different.

Do I think KAJ’s view is affected by his race, religon, age, era he played in .. Yes but that is called life.

I’m white and I’ve always thought Dirk was overrated. If he was actually tough on defense, he’d be arguably better than Larry Bird. But, he’s soft and will never be in the same league as Bird was.

Maybe that’s more along the lines of what Jabbar was trying to express. Plus, he’s now a old man and getting into the “why in my day ...” phase of life. Is he racist in his attitudes? As a black muslim how could he not be? But these comments of his about Nowitzki don’t seem to be based on race as much as a critical look at the man’s overall game.

He is probably the second best Power Foaward (though mostly a stretch 4) in the NBA during his era. Of course the Best Power forward ever plays a few miles south on I-35.

Yeah, Kareem said in the same interview that Tim Duncan has had a better career than Kobe. Kareem has some odd views, but I don’t see them as racist.

He’s pissed because Dirk is married to a black woman.
