Letter: What if Donald Trump and Ted Cruz formed a coalition?
The Chicago Tribune ^ | January 22, 2016 | Dale Plautz

Latest national polls show Donald Trump and Ted Cruz well ahead of their rivals by double digits. Much to the delight of the left-leaning media, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and the Democrats, this prime time "bashing" is fragmenting our party and chasing away would-be voters whom Republicans need to win the general election.

Instead of bashing each other to death in public in an attempt to secure the "top" Republican spot, how about an alternative strategy? How about a "grand coalition" instead of a fight-to-the-death match ?

If Cruz and Trump step back and look at the banquet table before them, they would see this: Any unifying (repeat: unifying) Republican candidate should easily defeat Clinton or Sanders if he or she does not alienate the base, and if he or she does not alienate independent voters....

It would be fine with me if they did. Both men are flawed, and I would vote for them despite their flaws.

Washington, Lincoln and Reagan were flawed.

A natural born Canadian is pretty much out of the VP picture if that’s what this means.

They did form a coalition when Trump invited Cruz to Trump Towers. Little did Donald know that Cruz would use this truce to stab him in the back.

“both Trump and Cruz are flawed.”

Are you expecting Jesus to run for President? If not, then you will have to pick a man with flaws.

I don’t believe I could vote for that.

Cruz should have stayed positive focusing on the issues.

But he decided to follow the path of Perry, Jindal, Walker, Graham. He'll join them soon:

Why would Cruz give up all of his principles to run with the most liberal candidate in the field?

If Trump wins I believe he will pick Ted Cruz for his VP. I know they are going at it, but the Republican party needs to be unified. But then again, neither of these guys have really signed on with the Republican party.

Did you ever see the movie “Kingsmen The Secret Service”? Think of the scene in Valentine’s fortress when Eggsy has Merlin activate the devices Valentine implanted in all the bad guys heads...................yeah it would be like that with the, shall we say overzealous, devotees of both Trump and Cruz.

Personally, I believe he would sell his soul to the crossroads demon to run.

Definitely not.

I know that in order to cast a vote for either one of these men, I will have to set aside things I don’t like about them.

I am certainly prepared to do that. I believe both of these men each possess more positive qualities than negative qualities.

I am not prepared to set aside my differences with the other GOP candidates.

Up until a few days ago I thought this was just a staged wrestling match to keep the attention on the two of them and keep the other guys off people’s radar. But it seems to have turned mean at least among the minions. If the polls are to be believed it is much more damaging to Cruz. I think that the damage to Cruz is largely a reaction to things like the arrogant National Review attack issue. People don’t like it when you tell them they are not conservative because they are supporting someone they believe is the candidate most likely to be able to turn the country around.

I wish that he had, but I expected him to, because just like Trump, Ted is running to win, not to come in second.

So despite the war that has erupted between them, I would forgive it.

He is born in Canada, but neither of his parents was Canadian so far as I know. It is possible that his father might already have applied for citizenship in Canada, but they arrived in 1969 and Ted was born in 1970. I suppose it’s possible for complete citizenship in a year, but I really don’t know. Perhaps it is impossible. I suspect there’s a residence requirement.

I doubt that by a technical definition he could be a natural born citizen of Canada. But he could be a citizen at birth by whatever law they have.
