Ultraconservative Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is fast building support in the Republican Party's evangelical wing, on Friday capturing an endorsement of his presidential campaign by the National Organization for Marriage, a vocal lobby which has fought against gay civil rights and same-sex marriage.
"Sen. Cruz has not only signed NOM's presidential marriage pledge committing to take specific actions as President, but he has personally authored the pending federal marriage amendment to restore the right of states to define marriage as one man/one woman," said Brian Brown, the president of the group.
The National Organization for Marriage led the fight against marriage equality, scoring victories in statewide votes before Washington, Maryland and Maine turned the tide in 2012.
It is notorious for internal memos on how to sow divisions in Democratic constituencies, such as "drive a wedge between gays and blacks" and make opposition to same-sex marriage "an identity marker" among young Hispanics.
"They are a staunch defender of traditional marriage and religious liberty, and a critical voice in protecting our rights," Cruz said. "I am proud to stand with the National Organization for Marriage and look forward to their help in our campaign."

If Ted takes Iowa the playing field will shift. The winner of the Iowa caucuses has gone on to win the Republican nomination 50% of the time.
;)
The last two presidents have won the Iowa caucuses as non-incumbents.
Ultraconservative? Funny how the relative perspective is being established for some folks. I don’t consider Cruz to be ultraconservative. He is just a regular conservative with the rest of the candidates to the left of him.
You know who I'm talking about..,.
"Sen. Cruz has not only signed NOM's presidential marriage pledge 'committing' to take specific actions as President, but 'he has personally authored the pending federal marriage amendment to restore the right of states to define marriage as one man/one woman," said Brian Brown, the president of the group.
Gotta laugh at the latest and greatest pejorative in the progressive world. Ultrascary!
Apparently they've learned that conservative isn't a negative. In a way, they're admitting a defeat of liberalism.
Well, words are important since the person who controls the language, controls the agenda. Now that they’ve used ‘ultra’ when it doesn’t really mean ‘in the extreme’ at all, what word will they use next to denote ‘beyond extreme’? I just noted on dictionary.com that when you use their thesaurus for the word ‘ultra’, you do get the word ‘extremely’ which would seem about right as a synonym for ultra. However, somehow the words extremist, fanatical, rabid and radical show up which sort of leaves the impression that the word ultra automatically gets paired with the views of people....and of course we know how and to whom that label typically gets applied.
