Why do we have nuclear weapons? Under what circumstances are they to be used, if ever?

To turn Mecca into glass.

They have a deterrent value. They are a guarantee that someone else, who wants to live and isn’t batshit crazy, isn’t going to use them first. However, in a world where the opponent thinks that martyrdom is next to godliness, they may not be a deterrent.

We have them to prevent ever having the need to use them.

But we won’t. So what is the point? If we can have nuclear weapons, why can’t Iran?
To: ilovesarah2012
So we can not be blackmailed by those who have them.
To: ilovesarah2012
Hopefully we elect presidents with an actual backbone who would use them if need be.

Because packing 20Mt of TNT into a barrel makes that barrel hard to lift.
It is just the compact option.

For the same reason I carry a concealed weapon.
In case I ever need it.

We should find out because those are the idiots we never want to elect.

MAD... mutually assured destruction works as a dererrant against those that don’t want to die. However, that doesn’t work against those who wish to die... so then you have to use them to achieve the fear to stop evil actions. We had suicide bombers in WWII, Kamakazis, and it worked.

Deterrence.
To make sure no one else dare use nukes on us.
Even if we never, ever use one again.
Same reason good people should have a gun.
Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Because they are insane.
We are good and they are bad/insane, and they do not respect the weapon and what it means.
