RedState's own Leon Wolf did a great job exposing the Politico story about Ben Carson and West Point as a lie. Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel is also churning out great information on Twitter regarding the story.
I want to focus on what Donald Trump is doing with the story, however.
Yesterday, November 5, Donald Trump had this to say about Politico:
Look, Politico is so dishonest in so many different things. This Politico website or whatever the hell they call it, I mean, they write about me. We don't deal with them anymore because the level of dishonesty is incredible.
Today, November 6, Donald Trump is spreading the false Politico story about Ben Carson. Below is one of the several Trump Tweets citing the Politico piece.
What an incredible turnaround. It appears Trump is willing to do whatever it takes to destroy Carson, who is poised to disrupt his position as GOP frontrunner.
Yesterday, Trump seized on the silly CNN investigation of Carson's childhood. According to Trump, Carson's childhood might be a "total fabrication.?
Ironically, much of Trump's support is due to the perception that he tells the truth and shuns the mainstream media. It is now clear that he will abandon that notion when it suits him politically.

I’m not being snarky, I’m being factual. CW has unhinged anger towards Trump because he exposed Walker as a weak candidate and it led to him dropping out of the race. When Walker was in the process of sinking, she was lashing out in all directions, and now Trump is the singular focus of her hate and bile.
I think you are incorrect in interpretation there tennmountainman. A 17 year old youth in high school ROTC is invited to all these fancy dinners, etc in the Detroit area. The military and ROTC folks seeing a young black male with good grades and ambition tell him that he can go to West Point if he wants. I see that as a very plausible scenario, especially in 1969 when the Army wants to improve its image with Vietnam going on...
It is how the semantics re interpreted. If someone said, Hey, if you want, we can get you into West Point—no charge to you. Personally, I would call that as being offered a scholarship. In fact I was offered one by the Navy under similar circumstances, but turned them down.
I am not a Carson supporter in this go-around. But for this story or non-story...whatever it is, it is bogus.
Now as for Trump...I am not certain if he retweeted someone else’s tweet on the topic or not. I am not even certain if a staff member of his did the tweet. I am not defending Trump here, even though I support his nomination...I did note though that at least during the interview with O’Reilly and with Maria (?) on Fox Business today, he did not bring up the West Point issue. On O’Reilly, he brought up the violence during his youth stuff, specifically, going after his mother with a hammer. Is it wise? I don’t think so. I think Trump should drop this line and let the press hammer Carson and be there to pick up the supporters if they flee.
We are in a lull part of the campaigns where nothing is really happening. Kinda like the Sitz-Krieg of early WW2. If Carson is going to fall, Trump should let his fall and not push him over. It is fair to talk about Carson’s positions on TPP, and other policy issue, but leave the personal stuff to the left or GOPe or whoever is conducting this line against Carson.
To a 17 year old, it was a offer of a scholarship. If you boil it down like a mathematical equation where you have the lowest common denominator, Carsons explanation is just fine.
Had he accepted, a form would have been filled out in his name and signed by the commandant of the regional ROTC and sent to WP admissions.

(That’s been her job after a short hiatus once Walker’s campaign imploded and he stopped paying all staff, including his GOPe social media hacks.)
As for Walker, He was on my short list but it became clear very quickly that he was lacking in charisma or decent staff, or something..
He ended his own campaign by default. Trump was just there..

Yeah, people usually manually retweet so they can add their own comment. You can’t do this through Twitter’s official retweet function, which keeps the original tweet as is.
As for Trump adding no comment in his manual retweet, he had no more room, given the 140-character limitation.
There are some things I like that Trump has said.
There are some things I dislike very much Trump has said.
However what you call “semantics” by Carson is more than that.
He could have said he was “encouraged” to apply at West Point.
That would have been a credible statement.
Saying he was “offered” a scholarship to West Point is an untrue
statement. Big difference in “encouraged” and “offered”.
“Offered” leaves the impression that that he embellished his story
on a statement that just isn’t true on how one enters West Point.
And it does a dis-service to those select few who are appointed to
West Point each year.
You certainly are entitled to your opinion (we all have one) but not to the facts.
You and others who personally take issue with me, instead of addressing the topic, are proof (to me) that you have no other avenue open to defend your position, and are left with attacking the messenger.
I wouldn't say that it was a "big" difference.
38 years ago, when I was a senior in high school and simultaneously taking night classes at the local J.C., one of my instructors - who was also the head of the Physics Dept. of a Junior College in nearby Mendocino County - told me, "Alex, I know you haven't even applied for my college yet, but I'm holding a place open for you in our Physics Dept. We have a $50,000 astronomical spectroscope for your exclusive use [I'd have probably been the only Physics major there]. And with your high G.P.A. and advanced standing [due to my night classes], you would be a shoo-in for the prestigious XYZ scholarship. It's actually almost too late to apply for admission, but I personally will write you a letter of recommendation to the Dean. I don't think that you'd even have to pay the usual tuition fees."
When reminiscing about my youth to my friends, I routinely refer to that as "having been offered a full scholarship." But I have absolutely no paperwork to substantiate that claim.
Question: Would anyone here sincerely call me a "liar?"

To change the argument a bit at least we know for sure where Carson went to college and that he received a doctorate degree in medical.
Where are Barry’s transcripts? He won’t release them but its open war on Dr Carson about a supposed ‘offer for scholarship/nomination process’ -—tempest in a teapot compared to Barry’s secrecy.

When you go to a college Career day and sit down with IBM, Microsoft, or even the Army, Navy or Marines, and you walkout with what anyone would call a offer of enployment and a business card and some handouts and a note that says “looking forward to your call”, then what is that?
Encouragement or a offer?
No paperwork was done...no contract was signed, in fact no records were retained except for some notes in the recruiters notebook.
What Carson received was offer and I’ll bet they would have been thrilled to have him, as he was highly qualified. His acceptance at Yale is proof of that.
