I remember too. As a young devotee of international power politics, I voted for LBJ because I thought we needed a no-nonsense, devious negotiator who would put fire in the bellies of our military, who would control the Congress, and who would brook no foolishness from the North Vietnamese and their allies.
As matters turned out, the slippery and big-talking salesman who was LBJ didn’t really understand international issues in depth, nor could he admit his mistakes until too late. Therefore he couldn’t deliver the goods, and disaster ensued.
Frankly, your 60s analysis calls your current judgment into question.
