It has been a week since reactionary House Republicans mounted a last ditch effort to either cut off federal money to Planned Parenthood or shut down the government. But the public interest won: Planned Parenthood and the federal government are still open. And thats just the way Richard Nixon would have wanted it. [ ]
So defunding Planned Parenthood would primarily mean telling low income people that their Medicaid coverage is of no use for the health care provided by Planned Parenthood. [ ]
It would also be unconstitutional, according to a recent article by David S. Cohen, a law professor at the Thomas R. Kline School of Law at Drexel University. Prof. Cohen has pointed out that efforts by Congress and the state legislatures to defund Planned Parenthood amount to bills of attainder, or unconstitutional laws that inflict punishment upon a particular individual (or corporation) for an alleged wrong without a court trial.
