‘A driver’s license works in every state.’

Yes, if just passing through. Once you become a resident of a different state, the expectation (law) is you apply for a driver’s license in your new state, in fairly short order.

Unless you have a commercial license

But in any event a CC permit issued in Alabama should be valid and transferable in Arizona or New York
