Gun traces are mostly useless. It is closing the barn door after the horses have escaped. A few stolen guns are returned to their rightful owners, but most of that could be accomplished without the Federal Government maintaining large data bases of who bought what gun.
The idea that "traces" are valuable is mainteed as a fiction to protect the validity of this proto-registration system.

So what? It came online.
Take it down.
The government can’t do IT security worth squat.
It’s too bad there isn’t a group dedicated to the Constitution, or American values willing to win in this age of information.

Once you start talking about the right of a person to own a gun, you’ve made the case for the Second Amendment.

Here's an article idea... not sure how old you are or how aware you were back then, but in the late 80's and early 90's they tried this propaganda move. In a coordinated fashion, all major newspapers wrote almost-daily anti-gun articles. The USA Today under Al Neuharth had a daily anti-gun incident in their States section, one for each of the 50 states. That was 50 anti-gun blurbs PER DAY for what, at the time, was the most widely-read newspaper in America.
Didn't work then, either.

Well after scrolling through I did find this:
CONTACT US
The site you are reading today is a work in progress. As The Trace evolves, expands, and improves, we welcome your feedback. Please send your suggestions, questions, and constructive criticism to letters@thetrace.org.
As we build a national network of correspondents, were interested in hearing from experienced journalists who know things we dont and are based in places we otherwise might not get to. Resumes and story ideas can be submitted to info@thetrace.org.
So you can send them suggestions or submit story ideas but my guess is you’ll be treated (if at all) with disdain and your opinions and story ideas round filed. I’m sure there are some who could submit ideas that would pass muster but doubtful any “pro-gun” info would be acceptable. Reading their mission statement alone is enough to taste a little bile.

Jeb Bush approves. I wonder how Donald Trump feels...
“The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions. I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With todays Internet technology we should be able to tell within seventy-two hours if a potential gun owner has a record.”
