Booker T Washington was emancipated when he was still quite young, and had the good fortune to be raised by his own family, so he didn’t experience the maltreatment many others did. Slaves could be beaten to death, raped, and sold off to never see their relatives again. Frederick Douglas’s account of his life should also be read by anyone who thinks the Blacks were better off before the Civil War. We shouldn’t forget either that Blacks also owned slaves.
Interestingly, both Jefferson and Lincoln did not think it would be possible to fully integrate the races.
Many blacks today have no dignity. If they did they would not be eating from the government trough. They are really the slaves of today. And the sad part, they call those who have rid themselves from this bondage, ‘uncle toms’. Crazy world and crazy times.
I think the title should read, “Slaves were more dignified than US blacks today”. Not that they “had more dignity”.
One thing to note is that the underclass in the UK (all white, all English) have the same problems as blacks and the white underclass in the USA — namely high unemployment, lots of welfare cheques, high out-of-wedlock births, majority single-mother homes and high incarceration rates.
