I saw the story of Dylann Roof's website break on my Twitter feed this morning, and in a just a few hours it's in the New York Times. The site contains images of Roof, as well as a manifesto in text. Here's the text (icky). Here's an image (icky):
I've taught college undergraduates. If there are no misspellings in this text -- and on a quick scan, I found none -- then Roof, a high-school dropout, didn't write it.
The manifesto is also very well-written, for what it is; I'd want to see a writing sample from Roof, possibly from his high school English teacher, before I concluded Roof wrote it.
So I wonder then, if not Roof, who? Could he simply have appropriate some other racist's work? Well, I Google for phrases from the Manifesto, and I don't find any hits other than this. So who wrote it?
The Times is right to be skeptical:
It is not clear who wrote the words and who took the pictures, but the manifesto appears to trace the evolution of the authors racist worldview and concludes with a section labeled An Explanation.
If there's one thing we've learned over the past few years, it's that "Internet evidence is not evidence," because it's too easy to alter or even manufacture it. Provenance is key. So while the site may be authentic, and the pictures may be authentic, there's one big piece of the site that doesn't look authentic at all.

Plenty of smart kids drop out of high school. Plus theres spell-check. With the Internet he could have easily learned about Rhodesia, etc.
Correct. Also check the opposite side of the jacket with the flags sewn on. It’s an academic award jacket given out to approx 170 out of 4000 students.
I don’t think this kid is stupid. There is a fine line between genius and insanity.
ROFL! Yeah, I believe it. Sure. LOL!!!
I’ve got one question about Sandy Hook that’s never been answered. We’re for the most part gun folks, and active shooters here, me included.
How did that nut job go into that school armed only with a 9mm (we have seen the video of the cops pulling the “assault” rifle out of a car trunk after the shooting) and there be NO injuries. Did all those kids and teachers sit there and wait for him to point the gun at them and pull the trigger? He was 100% on kill to injury ratio with live targets?
Smells fishy to me, but I voted for Republicans in the last 12-15 elections.
Reports I have read suggest he played video games, drank and did drugs with other unemployed friends. But in his other spare time, he researched Rhodesia and The Council of Conservative Citizens? He also failed ninth grade, but I guess in reality he was just another Einstein.
Doesn’t matter. Nine innocent people are dead and SC and others will remove the Confederate flag.
From his manifesto:
“I have read hundreds of slaves narratives from my state.”
Does that not strike you as strange?
For quite some time, these are the kind of liars who have the habit of putting little clues in the details. It’s a mindgame. But then, they are really into mindgames. They’re sick.
It’s too perfect.
A false flag to eradicate a real flag.
The last 7 years have been surrealistic.
Here I would also like to touch on the idea of a Norhtwest Front. I think this idea is beyond stupid. Why should I for example, give up the beauty and history of my state to go to the Norhthwest?
Guy couldn't even spell "North". And "Unlike many White naitonalists." And "But when we lern."
Plus there are capitalization and punctuation problems. "Iqs" for "IQs" -- I had trouble with that myself, but could see his version wasn't quite right. He also doesn't capitalize "jews" and "hispanics," but that may be a political thing done on purpose.
Point is, a high school dropout who was really interested in some topic and had done some reading about it -- even if the topic was odious and the reading horrible -- might be able to string words together fairly well. If it's not completely incoherent, it's not necessarily a hoax.
“Please forgive any typos, I didnt have time to check it.”
Not wanting to start anything on the thread, here’s a PM.
Remember that morning, CNN mistakenly showed a live film at a nearby school where there was a FEMA Emergency Management drill was happening and at first reported it was Sandy Hook.
Over at Sandy Hook, the school secretary, Barbara Halstead, calls in the first 911 to the fire station. Then she and the school nurse, Sally Cox, hide for 4 hours in the office closet one flimsy plywood door between them and where the LEOs decided to set up their command center after they “cleared” the school. TV viewers are hanging onto every word Fire Chief William “Bill” Halstead updates us on. Wait! Yep, he and the secretary are divorced with children but he’s not showing the least amount of concern that the mother of his children never came out of the school. Oops, wait once again. Their son, William Halstead, Jr. just happens to be the FEMA Emergency Management Analysis person for that area and had shortly before did a training drill for the Sandy Hook Fire Station.
Ah, so now we know why CNN had a heads up on the emergency drill at the other school. Oh, hmmm, the other school? Why, it is coincidentally St. Rose of Lima School which just happens to be the elementary school Adam Lanza supposedly attended - NOT Sandy Hook Elementary as was originally reported. And it is the only school transcript that Papa Lanza gave to the officials. BTW, it’s also directly across the street from where Adam Lanza got his hair cut by the barber (no license on record) who gave an interview about how weird he was.
Legitimate links to all this is out there but I’m not going to give them so as not to lead you down a primrose path. Sure, there’s crazy Gene, the happy smiling parents, the school that wasn’t a school, the boatloads of money before and after, the round and round merry go round at the fire station, the cops actions making no sense, the two other suspects, the lack of first responders, the weapon left in the trunk all day, the misidentified kids and photoshopping, the giggling creepy coroner who happened to had recently authored a bill to keep minors’ autopsies out of the public reign, but the zinger that sent me out to stock up on tin foil was the Halstead family.
Oh, well, wrong button so bring on the flames.
It is really no biggie. Cops do that to so the suspect calms down, sees them as being on his side, hoping he'll fess up and to keep any good doer from claiming they mistreated him.
Reichstag Fire Ping
Yes, to the residue.
It's not really a surprise that some sentences sound articulate and others ... not so much.
The fact that a murderer leaves a manifesto at all indicates that he or she probably has better verbal skills than the average killer.
