Trends are pretty easy to track these days - for example see
Google Flu Trends. All kinds of data is being collected and provides insight into national trends that were never before easy to ferret out in almost real time.
For instance, if there were a zombie outbreak, the search terms would show up pretty quick and actually be hard to obscure statistically - sort of like spotting photoshopped pictures.
