My g-g-g-grandfather owned 100 slaves in a plantation in the high country of SC before the Civil War, with a reputation for treating his slaves badly (as if one could treat them any other way, but he must have been a real sunab*tch.) I am not proud of him, and he deserved to lose everything in the war, as he did. But I am not him, his sins are not my sins, and in any case two g-g-grandfathers from two sides of the family fought against his side in the war. Blaming me or my skin color for Dylann Roof does not make one black life any better, and if black lives matter, the way to get them to matter more is not to place a burden on people who do not deserve it, but to find the bastards, black and white and brown and red and yellow, get them off the streets, remove them from society, and then teach ethics to everyone—not WHITE ethics, not BLACK ethics, RIGHT AND WRONG ethics.
