Exactly whose heritage does it celebrate?
Following the church shooting this week, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley offered powerful words of healing and said the “people of South Carolina need us to come together and be strong.”
But at the same time the state’s citizens are being urged to “come together,” the state continues to display a divisive symbol — the Confederate flag — outside the state Capitol.
Reacting to calls to remove it, Sen. Lindsey Graham said the flag “is part of who we are.”
His answer makes me wonder just who Graham means by “we.” Does he mean the white people of South Carolina? Does he mean the neo-Confederates of South Carolina? Surely he doesn’t mean the African Americans in his state whose ancestors were enslaved, tortured and murdered under the regime represented by that flag. Surely he doesn’t mean older African Americans who still recall the terrorism of Klansmen who adopted the flag as their standard during Jim Crow. Surely not.

A ‘take away’ It is a flag of US, WTP. Some may not like it or agree, but it is a big part of history. What if these same imbeciles choose to take away cotton? After all, this crop was instrumental in bringing thousands of black folk to this country. Their idiocy knows no bounds. Just as men fought and died throughout the world to keep our US flag flying, men/brothers did the same to keep the Confederate flag flying. Must we do it again???!
The Southern Poverty Law Center makes a very nice living labeling various groups, some of them conservative, as hate groups.
The irony of course is that the SPLC itself is a hate group, but since their hating is Politically Correct they rarely get called on their own behavior.
That said, there’s a group of posters here at FR who routinely sound like the SPLC when the subject touches on the Confederacy so this is hardly new for freepers who have roots in the South.
Cohen is a hate-monger and a totalitarian. I’m old enough to remember when even hippies used the Confederate flag as a sign of independence and rebellion. It has nothing to do with shooting black people in a church.
Not sure what that has to do with the price of tea in China...
If J. Richard Cohen is offended by the Confederate flag then all I have to say to him is that I’ve read the Constitution front to back many times and I’ve never found the clause that says you have a Constitutional right not to be offended.
Yeah, every so often they've got to get on their band wagon. The flags been off the dome and on the Memorial to Confederate Dead since 2000. Now 15 years later, because some drugged-out, zombie-eyed freak goes on a rampage, they're back to blaming a flag for what happened.
The flag stays, ship the SPLF to Iran to see what real intolerance is like.

I”m a California Yank. My forefathers fought for the North in the Civil War. I say the flag STAYS.
I had ancestors who fought and died carrying the Battle Flag. It was always a military flag. Does Cohen want us to dig up our ancestors too?
The flags of the Confederacy are easy to Google, but the ignorant will still call the Battle Flag the “Confederate Flag.” It was never the flag of the Confederacy.
The Lincoln Memorial offends me.
This is no different than ISIS/ISIL destroying antiquities, except that this is coming from the progressive/Liberals.
Both ideologies are equally destructive.
