J. Richard Cohen is president of the Southern Poverty Law Center
Exactly whose heritage does it celebrate?
Following the church shooting this week, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley offered powerful words of healing and said the people of South Carolina need us to come together and be strong.
But at the same time the states citizens are being urged to come together, the state continues to display a divisive symbol the Confederate flag outside the state Capitol.
Reacting to calls to remove it, Sen. Lindsey Graham said the flag is part of who we are.
His answer makes me wonder just who Graham means by we. Does he mean the white people of South Carolina? Does he mean the neo-Confederates of South Carolina? Surely he doesnt mean the African Americans in his state whose ancestors were enslaved, tortured and murdered under the regime represented by that flag. Surely he doesnt mean older African Americans who still recall the terrorism of Klansmen who adopted the flag as their standard during Jim Crow. Surely not.

I'm a Yankee that would like to hear from my Southern Brothers and Sisters about this issue.
TIME is irrelevant. THE FLAG STAYS!
I’m a transplanted Yankee, and am considering putting one up because of this notion.
Says it all. SPLC is as racist as they come.
Geez, not this again.
What about southern accents. They gotta go too?
Maybe when the rename Popeye’s to something else (Popeye is a white sailor man), and stop straightening their hair to look white, and stop wearing white clothing styles, and stop driving cars, which are a white man’s construction - among a whole bunch of other things,
then let’s consider the SC flag issue.
It certainly can go both ways.
Hey Time Magazine and SPLC, how about you drop dead or start worrying about stuff that’s actually important?
F that. Take down your commie and foreign flags on American soil first.
It’s the weirdos in the world who find so much meaning in symbolism. It literally drives them crazy.
You'll get as many people killed confiscating this flag as you would confiscating guns.
This IS what's important to liberals...someone's feelings.
Not ISIS terrorists, not record debt, not a broken education system....but a FRIGGIN FLAG!
But Mexicans and other South American transplants flying their expat flags... that’s cool. They have to have pride in the country they fled from, after all.
I've noticed that too.
My opinion FWIW is basically this: they've got too much time on their hands. They don't have to accomplish anything real, they make their living pushing symbols around on a computer screen all day, all week, all month, for years... they get to where they think that symbolic stuff is real.
Is this flag now officially the Hate Obsession of the Week?
I’m pretty sure last week’s Obsession was about that white lady pretending to be a black lady.
A year ago, Michelle O. displayed a hashtag slogan about #Bringourgirlshome. That never became a strong movement.
Go back to Russia, Dick!
I grew up in Texas, which many don’t know supported the Union during the CW.
I like that flag. It’s part of our history. Hands off.
It’s called States Rights, and one of the reasons the Civil War was fought. South Carolina has the right to determine for themselves what flags fly in it. If the people of South Carolina want it removed, then let them elect legislators who’ll do it. Otherwise Richard Cohen, STFU.
They can come and try to take it.It wont end well.
