I fell for them too in the 70s and 80s. Before AIDs, gay men really seemed to like women and they would escort us to theater, ballet and foreign movies when straight men were sitting in sports bars. Of course, we didn’t realize that they were insulting us once they dropped us off home and they were off to the bathhouses.

Well, I certainly don’t think of myself as someone with low self-esteem. It took me thirty years to find a man who was straight and loved ballet, theater and foreign films. And back in the 70s and 80s I was often a beard for a dear friend who couldn’t appear to be gay because of his employment. Ah, he threw me under the bus in the late 90s but hey? I used him as much as he used me.
