You don’t need a lot of offense if your defense can keep the ball out of the net. The USWNT has been an impressive powerhouse so far in the tournament. It will be interesting to see if Ellis changes any of that to try and get more scoring.

The primary criticism of her predecessor was the lack of quality defense and poor defensive play has cost the team in earlier cups.

If any changes are in store - I doubt they will be made for the China game.

On a different topic for Berlin_Freeper - does a player qualify for a cap by simply playing in a world cup game, or do they have to be a starter?

Love the World Cup!

Glad you are enjoying the competition tahoeblue, me also!

I think USA is going to do well against China because their attack seems weaker and of defense is stronger. Hope Solo really stepped up.

Quarter Final games are going to be Amazing!
I am stocked up with Red Bull and really looking forward. :)

About caps, it seems appearance is what counts because that makes them Cap-tied.

Titanic duels set quarter-finals in motion
Either of Friday’s two mouth-watering last-eight clashes could easily pass for the Final: one of them – China PR-United States – is actually a repeat of the 1999 showpiece match, while the other – Germany-France – pits a two-time world champion against a rising force determined to win the tournament for the first time.

France coach: Now or never vs. Germany
"They know what they have to do. It's their World Cup. They have taken themselves through to the quarterfinals. Now, it's up to them. They have the determination. It's also important, because there are women who are coming to the end of their national team careers, and they know full well it's now or never."

Germany, France qualify for Rio 2016
Since the results from the Women's World Cup do not clearly identify the third best team from Europe, a play-off with the remaining teams, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, will take place. UEFA will host a mini-tournament where six matches will be played during the FIFA women's international match date from 29 February to 9 March 2016.

preparing his side for a military campaign
"They need to be ready for physical combat, they need to be focussed on detail and to have no regrets at the end," said Bergeroo at the team`s pre-match press conference.

"A steamroller, it`s true Germany will exert huge physical pressure. We have other qualities but in the first 20 minutes we`ll have to be very present in the duels," he continued.

The only complaint about Friday’s FRANCE-GERMANY matchup is that it has arrived as a quarterfinal. But that can’t be helped at this point, so one of the teams will go home much sooner than its fans expect.
