I'm under 40. I was a kid in the 1980s. "Red" was ALWAYS associated with Communism prior to 2000. Other tyrannical regimes like NAZI regime were remembered for their red logos in the history books.

I find it amusing that on the confederate flag threads, a bunch of posters get all huffy and insist "we WON'T let the media define symbols for us!! Just because the media says the stars and bars represent racism, we REFUSE to go along with it!! TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY!!" Then threads like this come around, the media wants to tar the conservative moment as "red" so we get lumped in with communists and NAZIs, and a bunch of "Tea Party Patriots" happily embrace it and LOVE being called "red". Not me. You want to wave the confederate flag and claim it represents "states rights" despite what the media says, you need to stop waving the "red" logo and claiming it represents the GOP because the media gave you marching orders in 2000 that it does. You can't have it both ways.
I'm under 40; but I also have a bit of interest in some of the East Asian cultures (where red is considered fortuitous, and has been for centuries).
In fact, the western bad connotation of red is very, very recent (essentially the Cold War) -- the British, for example, had red forces representing allies up until WWII [IIRC] when they needed to use blue to work with the other allied forces.
