Lincoln sought to deport freed slaves
The Washington Times ^ | February 9, 2011 | Stephen Dinan

The Great Emancipator was almost the Great Colonizer: Newly released documents show that to a greater degree than historians had previously known, President Lincoln laid the groundwork to ship freed slaves overseas to help prevent racial strife in the U.S.

Just after he issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, Lincoln authorized plans to pursue a freedmen’s settlement in present-day Belize and another in Guyana, both colonial possessions of Great Britain at the time, said Phillip W. Magness, one of the researchers who uncovered the new documents.

So you don't hate all racists, just one. I see now.

I hate tyrants. Racists of that time period were the norm.

That remains to be seen. I am always open to newly discovered evidence.

Well you can start by reading the entire speech, especially the part where Lincoln spoke against slavery and the part where Lincoln said that the black man was entitled to the same rights guaranteed under the Declaration of Independence as a white man. Remember this was in response to Chief Justice Taney's Scott v. Sanford decision where he said that the black man, free or slave, was not entitled to any rights that a white man was bound to recognize. Lincoln was in total opposition to Taney and Douglas in that respect. Yet you place him below either man in terms of racism.

I think my very white, very smart mentor and computer geek friend who even studied with me for some IT certifications would have a different opinion, and as far as he is concerned I can walk into his house whenever, now a thug, low grade no-grow, well thats a different story and you would have a point, no one can live with those.

Those are them, I do not have any of those issues, and no offense we are not Japan nor Europe, we are a melting pot, just some folks need to get the head out of their asses and learn to be an American, I did.

Yes it was. Unequivocally the US of 1860 was an extremely racist place.

I’ve been to Africa and seen real racism and tribalism. My interpreter would tell me as we passed through villages that “those people” use to be his ancestors slaves.

There isn’t one African who wouldn’t give their right arm to come to America.

Racists of that time period were the norm.

Yet you singled out one, and only one, for criticism.

I hate tyrants.

I'm not sure you know the meaning of that word.

I've read the whole thing. I even quoted a portion of what you mention. Your point has nothing to do with the fact that Lincoln regarded blacks as inferior and wanted to deport them.

I place him near the same level in terms of racism. I place him above them in levels of dishonesty. Given the fact that the writers and signers of the Declaration continued to keep slaves, it is patently dishonest to claim that the document was intended to apply to slaves.

It sounds like Abraham Lincoln was applying the "living constitution" doctrine to the Declaration of Independence.

No, it didn't mean that when it was written, and to say it did is to be dishonest.

And I dare say many of them make better Americans than some of our home grown citizens.

Uh dude, he's the thread topic. Should I have been talking about Napoleon?

I'm not sure you know the meaning of that word.

It means someone who wants to make me do something that I don't want to do, and against which I have every moral right to object.

The nation was founded on the principle that people have a right to self determination. Lincoln rejected that founding premise.

There’s a marked cultural difference as would be expected, in my view. In the same way, Asians born and acculturated here are different from those of their traditional homeland. LBJ didn’t do blacks any favors by federalizing welfare with AFDC. That was the death knell of the black family structure.

“As provisions in welfare laws offered ever-increasing economic incentives for shunning marriage and avoiding the formation of two-parent families, illegitimacy rates rose dramatically.

For the next few decades, means-tested welfare programs such as food stamps, public housing, Medicaid, day care, and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families penalized marriage. A mother generally received far more money from welfare if she was single rather than married. Once she took a husband, her benefits were instantly reduced by roughly 10 to 20 percent. As a Cato Institute study noted, welfare programs for the poor incentivize the very behaviors that are most likely to perpetuate poverty.”

Clement Vallandigham (1820-1871). He also served two terms in the US House of Representatives.

This current situation has been brewing but from what I understand wasn’t always the case. I have been under the impression that the black family began to fall apart after LBJ’s Great Society, welfare explosion. I don’t understand why people without jobs stay where there are no jobs. But with welfare, they don’t need to move so it becomes a stewing pot of idleness, etc. While it appears to be a tribal mindset and behavior I don’t think it has always been that way. Liberals seem to love keeping people in hovels like this don’t they?

Fun fact:

When he was a young circuit-lawyer traveling from district to district, Abe Lincoln was attacked and beaten by blacks and his coworker beaten so severely it can only be described as attempted murder.

And this was several years BEFORE emancipation.

I did not know he was mayor of Columbus. That's what I love about this place. You learn something new every day.

Other countries would have to be paid to take them. Trillions maybe. But it would be worth it.

Umm I wouldn’t say I am an isolated individual, but be that as it may I am happy to be an American, one thing my dad told me was that I was lucky to be born here.
