Killing people because they differ in what they believe is not love either.

You would have had a number of them give up on the sect and come back. The desire to have children and a family is very much part of human nature.

Yet the Shakers are now extinct, due to universal continence.

And the history of the Crusade is complex, as indicated by the Encyclopedia entry. The pope first recommended persuasion, which was attempted over a long period of time. When coercive means were finally employed, the motivations of the Crusaders became intertwined with other worldly ambitions, as they sometimes do.

It’s a far more complex situation than that described in the article.
